A couple of months ago I asked for you guys’ advice on which beginner level pistol kit to buy, either the Queen Anne pistol or the Harpers Ferry both by Pedersoli. Well I took the advice to heart and went with the Harpers Ferry. Below is the result. I was pretty easy you to assemble and finish but it did give me more respect for those who do the custom work. I hope you’all like the looks of it. Planning to shoot it for the first time next week.

One change I made was to polish off the color hardening on the lock. I think is looks much better now and more closely matches the originals I've seen. What do you'all think?

Absolutely, there is nothing uglier than a case colored lock. Especially a flintlock. I did the same thing to my Pedersoli Frontier rifle. Nice job.

Hi Trench,
"Absolutely, there is nothing uglier than a case colored lock. Especially a flintlock. I did the same thing to my Pedersoli Frontier rifle. Nice job."

I like case colors, especially when I do it myself.

Well, when one makes an statement in the absolute, he sometimes finds egg on his face. That coloring job is indeed well done.

How did you do that? What materials did you use? Do you have to disassemble the lock?

I removed the frizzen and then soaked the lock in toilet bowl cleaner. After the coloring is gone, dip the lock immediately in a baking soda bath to stop the reaction or rust will appear quickly.

When I take case hardening off I just sand it off! Use varying grits up to 320 and then use steel wool. Works well!

That's pretty much how I did it too. Just 320 grit paper followed by 000 steel wool and a little 3 in 1 oil. It was amazing how easy the color came off. Only took a few minutes and left the stampings dark and clear.

I do agree with trench, plus I also prefer for the lock finish to match the barrel.

And thanks to everyone for your comments :)
