That type of sheath is done directly on the rawhide for the lower body part, and brain tan for the top panel that wraps around and sews back into itself. It is then stitched to the top, preferably with sinew, nothing else looks as proper. Buffalo rawhide is best for the body, with the brown epidermis left on to replicate the originals.
