Fifty years ago , I saw an old original long rifle , with a cobbled up tang mounted peep sight. Just a piece of bent sheet metal , with a small hole in the upturned end next to the shooter's eye. Back then , I didn't think much of the simple peep sight , but when my eyes became 70 + years old , I installed one on my deer rifle. As bad as my eyes are , I could see the sights , and the target , with perfect clarity. It put me back in business again. ......oldwood

You are correct sir. The peep sight is older than folks think. A real remedy for ageing eyes. I will be 75 next month. None of my rifles have scopes. All but one have peeps. They make all the difference. I have plans to put one on my flintlock after research showed that original Hawkens could be ordered with a peep rear sight. Coupled with a brass or silver front blade, accuracy is no problem within round ball range.

Mike.........I build a few hunting m/l rifles for folks. A guy I know , ordered a .58 long rifle ,with a peep sight right off the bat. When sighting the rifle in , I put targets up at 50 yds. , 75 yds. , and 100 yds. Shooting from the bench , the .562 balls made a 5 " group at 100 yds. I'm 75 yrs. old , and I was amazed. Years ago I could shoot like that , but not lately. A big doe walked onto the target range at the 150 yd. marker , while we were shooting. I put the sights on her broadside form with a top of the spine hold , and I could see she would have been mine , If legal to shoot. .............oldwood
