I guess I should have looked at this site more than a cursory glance. I did not realize that further down there were these other "branches". My question is are there any other "mountainmen" message boards. This is a really good one. I am going to need advice on accfroutments and so on. I have the books, "Firearms Tools etc" the "1837 Sketchbook"( I could use an earlier version)"Indian Sign Language" I even have "Female Fashions of the Fur Trade" for my femine side,,,, Just kiddin. My girlfrind likes going out and doing this stuff. I Have done Rev War civilian/scout stuff for a bunch of years. Now I could use references for western Mocs/footwear, etc. I know all the eastern stuff and realize I can use much of it. Thanks

Most of the others I've seen are directed only to a single time period and an earlier one at that (18th only) .

From what I have seen, this is easily the best.

The people are friendly and helpful. There are no flames. Folks genuinely are helpful and they all seem to know that they don't know everything and respect the opinions of others.

This is a good place for your questions.

Welcome and jump right in. :m2c:

A lot of eastern equipage and other things went west with the mountain men, including not a few Native Americans, such as the Delaware (to say of another trapper " he went under like a Delaware" was the highest form of praise) and Iroquois.

If you read Osborne Russell's journal from the mid to late 1830's, you will note he refers several times to checking the priming for his rifle, so rocklocks were still in.

Scroll down to the sixth thread ("Very interesting reading on Rocky Mountain trapper") some good links.

Go to google, and type in American Mountain Men. Dean Rudy has a really nice site, with a ton of info on just about everything. There is also an Archives link that goes back quite a few years. Its really worth reading. Also, check out Buck Conner's site. He just published a book on the Fur Trade, and is available now.
