Your deer is suffering from ground shrinkage.

I was hunting with a bunch of buddies a couple of years ago when a fawn walked out between us.
I drawed down on it and was about to fire when one guy said it is too small.
Another friend tried but his gun didn't fire only the cap went off.
He didn't get a deer that year either.

I was packing my 50cal TC Flint Lock and wanted to make meat real bad.
