Howdy all,
Well after a 11 month wait (the delay was due to me changing the order a few times) I got my TVM Virginia rifle. Brass mounted, wooden patch box, Chambers Colonial Virginia Lock, 38 inch Swamped Rice barrel in 54 caliber, carvings were; beavertails, feather behind tang, lines on belly and ramrod channel, lines in cheekpiece, and thumbprint in wood box, and aged finish. And I must make note of the fact that this rifle doesn’t have a speck of wood more on it than it needs, in other words, very thin wood. The Super Premium maple wood is exquisite. I had Matt install a Chambers White Lighting touch hole liner and he did such a superb job you can not see that it even has a liner installed.
Took her out to the range and she points better than she looks and she looks fantastic. I had the stock cut to my pull length with a little cast-off in the butt and I can bring the rifle up with my eyes closed, then open my eyes and be looking right down the sights.
Things I learned from the first shot; the L. C. Rice made Chambers lock is the best sparking lock I have ever seen, not that I have seen that many, but this thing throws an unbelievable amount of sparks right into the pan. I have shot 46 shots so far with the first flint and it still has a lot of shots left in it. The barrel is so smooth that ramming a patched ball down it when it is dirty is like ramming a ball in other barrels I have shot when they were freshly clean. If you have yet to deduce the fact that I am quite enthralled with this rifle, I am.
Now to the question; I was shooting .535 ball with .015 and .022 patches with and without a felt wad under the ball and have not quite gotten the groups I was expecting. I have used 2F and 3F Schuetzen powder from 60 to 75 grains with Hoppe’s and Wonderlube on the patches. The .015 patches showed some blow by, but other than that the other combos using felt wool wads and the .022 patches looked good. My best group at 25 yards is about an inch. I don’t know where to go next. If any of you find folks that have shot Rice barrels can relate some ball, patch, lubes combos I might try I would be most appreciative. I also want to thank all those on this forum who advised me on the selection of the components for this rifle.
