NEW YORK CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE UPDATE . . . To help determine whether the disease is being carried in the nearby wild deer population, state environmental officials will attempt to kill 420 wild deer beginning this week, reports the Times-Union. The hunt was announced a week and a half after two white-tailed deer from separate but captive herds in Oneida County, New York, tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease, and three more deer from the first identified deer's herd subsequently tested positive.

In Illinois, they disignated so many counties and asked hunters at the check in stations if they would mind if they cut the heads off. Some with small bucks got the rack cut off for them .The DNR took over 6,000 samples. Only 2or3 deer came out positive. They were from upper most North counties bordoring Wisconsin. The next year they checked and came up with about the same results. Feeding deer other than food plots is now illegal. Salt blocks are banned for wildlife as well. There is no more inport or export of live deer or elk across state lines. The DNR seems to believe that isolation of healthy animals from possible infected animals is the key.
