Okay, I finished my rifle and pistol last week and now have just about finished my possibles bag. I am focusing on the Southwest, so it has some Indian tilt, plus a conch from the Mexican influence. Still have to finish the straps, but the hardest part is done. It is bison/deer trim. It darkened somewhat when I put some neatsfoot oil on the backside and it soaked through the total skin. I like the way it turned out a little darker. It is really soft and I hope not too soft.

That came out great! I like the way the color came out. It makes the conch and star stand out.

Still being a newbie and not all that experienced with leather, I can't say for sure it is a split grain, but the description follows:
This is a nice, brown buffalo suede leather hide. It measures 11 1/2 square feet, is about 4-6+ oz. in weight, and is soft and pliable. This is an 'A' grade craft hide so expect some natural blemishes, weight variation, etc. Also, the back has been left natural so it is a little uneven.. It didn't have many blemishes, but did have some weight variations. I'm not at all unhappy with the color and feel it ended up with; the neatsfoot finish on the inside also added some waterproofing.

Sounds like a split. No dense "top grain" (hair side). That's why it soaks up the oil and may stretch of oiled too much.

It looks great though. You did an excellent job.

I just put a little oil on the inside, not a lot, so it should be okay without stretching much.
