ME I'd be suspicious when you pull the barrel is the barrel channel finished? if so does it look the same and follow the grain pattern? if unfinished wet it and check the grain. back in the mid to late 90's the importers brought in what they called "ultra grain" accentually it is a painted on faux finish, just like a lot of builders do to make the wood appear to be a higher grade
 
That's a nicely figured stock. Looks like Circassian walnut which is English. Turkish,french can all look similar. I have a some Ruger m77's that were stocked from the factory with high grade Circassian and are beautiful.
As someone who saws and mills my own wood the position of the slab when cut makes a huge difference on the grain. Plain or flat sawn all the way to quarter sawn have different looks to them.
