Whats the general feeling on using old cotton nightgowns and cotton shirts for patches?
My CVA mt rifle likes a thinner patch (.010-.013) and I Can get this stuff cheap, its used as "all cotton shop rags" and mics at .012 to .014.
I have made some and lubed them. seem to shoot ok but definately not reusable as some do that. They seem to do ok ball to bore wise but the bottoms usually look burnt and tattered.

Your thoughts on grannie's nighty?

For the best results use what your rifle likes,if thats the material that it shoot well with then use it.

If it works, go for it. As long as it has no synthetics in it, there shouldn't be any problems using it.

I like them for cleaning,to light for patches. One time, don't know where I got it,I had a light denim that was good when I used a .05 under bore size RB. I used it in a 54 with a 535 ball. It was a tight weave, worked as I couldn't use my regular patch material. Dilly

I would suggest that you use the rest of the garmet and just throw the bottom away.
Granny may have had a "little problem" there.

:rotf:

The weave on the nightgowns I've seen is rather loose which may not make te best patch.

If the area where the ball meets the bore doesn't look burned thru after shooting, using them will be OK, but if that area looks burned or charred they are probably blowing out.
If they blow out they will not produce the best accuracy.

I have used old T shirts as cleaning patches, but they are pretty useless as shooting patches. Too thin and the weave is not tight.

Don't forget to ask her first, otherwise she might fetch a switch up longside your behind...

I have tried flannel a few times and had a few patched burn through, but I think that was a result of not enough lube, not the material itself...
