Has anybody made a nipple protector for there percussion guns a buddy of mind had one of a minie ball but I was wondering if anybody made one or if it is good for use while hunting thanks

When I used to go hunting with a "cap smacker" rifle. I just used a small piece of leather to put between the hammer and cap with a small thong attached to it and then tied the other end to my trigger guard. Simple is always the best I say!

My experience with Nipple Protectors comes from decades of using them on Military Rifle Muskets, Rifles and Carbines. They were designed to protect iron/steel nipples from damage caused by the hammer, should the hammer drop on a bare nipple.

However, I used them primarily to protect the nipples when I dry fired the lock to check the trigger pulls as the work progressed and to ensure it was "right" when the work was done. So I beat the heck out of a bunch of repro Enfield Nipple protectors over the years and kept replacing them UNTIL a NSSA shooter I knew came up with plastic hull cartridges for Civil War era Smith Carbines.

I needed a new protector very late one night and after the Sulter's who carried them had closed down for the night. (I sometimes worked on guns up to midnight or later at the NSSA National Shoots to get guns ready for competition the next day.) I looked at one of the plastic Smith cartridges and cut it short so the base would just fit over the nipple. It worked GREAT!! From then on, I collected those plastic cartridges when they eventually split from use in firing and used them as nipple protectors.

The suggestions to use a piece of leather for hunting, made by others above, is a good idea to use when hunting with a civilian percussion lock rifle or shotgun.
