Good morning all,

After an absence of many years in shooting black power rifles (former CW reenactor), I have a strong interest in getting back into the swing of things again, having recently purchased a Pedersoli 1861 Springfield and Navy Arms Mississippi Rifle. (I was floored by the prices for new rifles as they have more than doubled when I bought them 18+ years ago, even from Cabelas).

Anyway, when I used to shoot BP often, buying powder and musket caps were no problem. Now...different story as the store that I used to purchase from cannot afford all the red tape and regulations that comes along with storing BP.

I have a few cans of 2f and 3F stored, but will use Pyrodex RS for plinking.

Anyway, when I ordered some musket caps I had to pay the hazmat fee to have them shipped (this too was a surprise as I never had to do that years ago).

My question: Is there a nipple that will fit the threads on my muskets that will take No. 11 percussion caps? If so, where can I find them?

Thank you for your time.

I use a Treso Ampco No. 11 nipple on one of my Parker Hale Musketoons, just in case I want to shoot and don't want to use precious musket caps :) there's a shop near me that sells musket caps but they're an hour away and I can drive 10 minutes and get No 11's.

There's a nice Australian man who sells Treso nipples on Ebay , you can get a Treso in No. 11 size for your rifle.

As was mentioned, Track of the Wolf has several #11 nipples with musket size threads for sale.

The problem is, these come in several different sizes of threads so you will need to determine what the threads on your existing guns are.

If you don't have a thread guage and a micrometer or vernier caliper you can take your existing nipple(s) to a good hardware store or a auto parts store and they can figure out what the thread size is. Among the thread sizes you may have are a 5/16-18, 5/16-24, 8-1 mm, 8-1.25 mm,

When you look at the TOTW nipple pages in the link below, pay special attention to look for nipples that say they are for #11 caps. Most of the musket size nipples they sell use musket caps.

The size you need is 8x1, listed for Pedersoli Springfield 1861.

Search for 8x1 #11 nipple Treso on Ebay

I only use Treso nipples for everything. Won't use anything else.

You'll save shipping using the Ebay guy, its like $2.50 and it arrives quick, given it's from Australia.

Awesome :)
Plus I make paper cartridges for the Enfield I have with the #11 nipple, I carry the cartridges to the range in a repro "carbine cartridge box" and a Ted Cash #11 capper that holds 50 caps fits perfectly in the little tool pouch.

Can you guys in the States still find the older CCI caps, not the re-enactor ones that are less powerful and won't set off Pyrodex. I can buy Goex here but it's pretty expensive.

I just had a look at the “local” Cabelas store online. Price seems to have jumped since i’ve last checked! It’s now $49.99 per pound (Canadian dollar of course). You all are indeed very lucky. I purchased mine pre-9/11 at $10/lb. Pyrodex ranges from $28-$35, plus is far easier to find as the real stuff they wont ship. I only have a couple pounds of Goex left though.
