I went to Bass Pro in East Peoria IL yesterday to get some GOEX. I was informed they were phasing it out. They sold the last lb a week ago. Not sure if that is company wide or just not enough demand in my area.

That is not good news. Probably not enough demand. Heck, many people out there don't even know there is a difference between it and Pyrodex so don't bother to look for it. Also keep in mind most muzzleloaders today are the "modern" kind... I know we're not supposed to mention that so I'll get off the subject right quick.

The real black is for the traditional enthusiasts, and frankly we are few and far between, especially in places like Peoria, IL. As the older members among us (the majority of us are middle aged or older) pass on, that number will further shrink.

Also, in the event that I do see people at the local outdoor range shooting traditional BP guns (I'm usually the only one) they are shooting cap and ball revolvers. Today's shooters have really embraced the cap and ball revolver. It is a rare thing to see anyone else shooting a BP caplock or flintlock rifle, musket, or shotgun. I understand this may not be the same on the East Coast where BP shooting and reenacting seems to be a bigger deal.

My guess is either not enough demand or the cost of upkeep of explosive materials has gotten to be too high.

You can sit at home, use the computer, call a BP shipper and have it delivered to your door and cheaper than making a long trip.

Ask Walmart and the rest who is busting them financially, internet vendors.

Seems simple again.

Most likely the $28 per pound plus tax price tag they had on it had something to do with it too. It was nice to have a local source for emergency shortages tho.

CONGRATULATIONS ONE AND ALL!

History is making a circle, and we're returning to the days when folks had to DIY a lot of stuff, or you had to order it shipped to you, by rail, by coach (now it's by truck); by dudes in a really really long birch canoe.

At $28 a can I wouldn't buy from them anyway. I don't pay near that for Swiss including shipping. It's really simple, buy several cans at a time.

Very true!

I am within driving distance of Graf and Sons, and recently made a large "powder run". I'm set for easily two or three years, but when the time comes I'll do bulk mail orders which is the next best thing. :)

I would love to order bulk.
Unfortunately the law here in Illinois decided that we can't have more than 5 pounds at any one residence. I do have friends and relatives who are willing to let me store some since they don't shoot blackpowder tho. :)

Yep!...Corporate greed is the law of the land now...The big fish gobble up everything and then each other....

20 years ago the big fish gobbled up all the little guys in my area.....Now they are getting gobbled up and the little guys are returning....

There was one shop back home in Southern Illinois that stocked Goex. I bough a few pounds of it from the guy and he told me that might be the last time he sells it. He told me he just didn't sell enough of it to keep up with the costs of maintaining the explosives license or whatever in his small shop. This was about 3 years ago. I don't know if he still sells it but probably not.

Guys the man has made it to where the small guys can't afford to stock the powder, and the demand just isn't there to make up for that increased cost. Thank God for people like Grafs and Powder Inc. If they ever go away, it'll get hairy for the flintlock and caplock community for sure. :(

Anyone know what it costs to have a license to sell BP?

No sir.

Cost of the license and the cost of the storgage container is most imporant with local fire codes.

I remember stopping at a supplier and he had to go to the country and bring the powder to my truck for delivery.

Varies by the city and state.

OMG, that's funny Dave! Placed the order by electronic messenger specifying sizes and quantities. They'll be bringing it by brown covered wagon and it should be here in a week or two.

Absolutely full circle with modern methods. I'm already hearing that song from Music Man "That Wells Fargo Wagon is a coming down the street, oh please let it be for me!"

LD may just have a point. At this point most states don't mind but it could very well be banned one day soon. Flinters will be inoperable at that point if there are even any fake powders available.

Doesn't hurt to know how if it's safe, which has been my major hesitance.

At least they did have it. Been years since I could buy locally. Most counties hereabouts have severe restrictions on storage, so shops quit stocking it. Now you have to drive over an hour or more if you know where to find it. Can still get Pyrodex and T7. Not BP but it's any port in a storm. Ordering is an option. If you can only keep five pounds, perhaps you can get together for a group buy?
