I keep a "floating balance" of several kilos for that reason. Worst they can do is make me shoot less targets, not give up altogether.

One more Boston episode and it could be curtains for the whole industry!

Well REAL BLACK POWDER is very hard to come by in PHX, the only place that sell it is shall we say not dependable to answer the phone. When they do answer they apprently have to go to some off site magazine and pick it up. Then if you are not their to pick up the power it is transported back to the magazine, and you are SOL.

Back in the EARLY 70's it became impossible to buy the stuff in Los Angeles Co. As most cities & the county passed ordence on sale, ands storage.

My club at the time had a magazine that would store up to 25#'s of members power as part of your dues.

I know there are still online retailers that sell the stuff, but with all the threats of Teorrism Black Powder is being watched closely by BATFE.

Sign of the times. Bad people get laws passed that effect good people.

The U.S. Navy use to be a big buyer of BP, but have pretty much phased out the stuff for more powerful alternatives.

Is that a provable fact?
Please do not start rumors.
Personally, methinks bp would be a very low priority for them with all the more powerful, sophisticated, explosives that are available today.

I think it has to do more with the replacements and new shooters being told it is better. plus it is easier to get. then the inline shooters who would not even think of using real black. then there are all the myths of black it will blow up with a dirty look and on an on.

then in the 70's and 80's there was a great b-p revival. there were shooting matches every week end. now there is just one club that has matches 30mi from me.

Anyone know what it costs to have a license to sell BP?

The last time I asked my local dealer he said $25.00 per year for a license.
$250.00 plus shipping for a small powder magazine.
He said the extra paper work made it less something he wanted to waste time on.

But his biggest reason was that all of his customers can just buy it at wholesale.
No reason for him to stock it.
He said that how and why in 20 years there won’t be any for sale.
He dumped his entire black powder accessories last Feb.

One of the big deals about re-selling black powder is that you have to store it separately from everything else in an "explosives magazine". As a consumer, federal law allows you to keep up to 50-lbs. of it at home and they don't require a separate safe or anything. Some states put lower limits on the amount their residents can have at home.

I tried dealing with that particular unmentionable seller - open Mon-Fri during hours while everyone is at work & not available on weekends. After several calls to try to arrange to pick up several cans, they were unable to actually commit to having it available at a particular time. I think they support the anti-gun bad guys, since they're not apparently shooter friendly or competent to coordinate to meet a pick-up schedule.

I used to have family in Tucson & would get my powder from Thunderstick Trading Co. At least they answer the phone & can have an order ready to pick up on a Saturday.

Many big box stores really don't want to sell black powder, or smokeless powder either, for that matter.

So they make excuses about federal regulation, fire codes, fire marshals, etc.

The Bass Pro store on Oklahoma City does not carry black powder. They claim the fire marshal won't allow any smokeless powder on the shelves. That's a lie because other stores in Oklahoma City have smokeless powder on display.

Boston marathon bombing? Black powder and nails in a pressure cooker? 2013? Home made explosive device? Ringing any bells? Huh?

According to the FBI sporting black powder was not used....They disassembled fireworks...

I plan to drive to Grafs and pick up a large supply myself. The black I have now I ordered from them. I think the shipping cost was reasonable. I don't think you could justify buying only one pound at a time shipped, but in larger quantities the cost is reasonable.

A gun shop here quit carrying black because of the low demand. The last they had was stored in an explosives magazine, just a large red steel box that they had to keep by the door so in case of fire it could quickly be pulled out.

I think all this terrorism discussion stuff is hooey. There are recipes online for homemade explosives that do not have a paper trail. The three terrorist who bombed that french airport a while back used the homemade stuff. The Oklahoma City truck bomb was homemade. I can't think of any recent terror attack where store bought black was used. I do belive it was used many decades ago in the largest schoolhouse mass murder ever in the country.

:cursing: Its great that we have to read information that is not correct. Boston bombing was not bulk powder as is stated, but was collected from FIRE WORKS. so what does this have to do with buying any powder from a supplier that sales powder. It seem that we can not stick to the subject

Yes they used firecrackers bought in another state.

One of my scouts daughters died in the bombing but selling black powder had nothing to do with it.

That is a great idea. The people there are nice. I just made a powder run to them last month, bought 8 cans I did. Seven of the cans were their own brand, quite cheap yet the quality is good or better than Goex and I've been pleased with it. Probably should have bought more, but I head on back that way towards Illinois to visit family, so will make another powder run in the future.

If you guys think that politicians will make the distinction between firecracker powder and shooting powder you are, in my opinion, a bit optimistic.

All they need is an excuse and this is an easier path for them than fixing the real problem. And I am talking from experience in a country which has gone down this path.
