Well, I finally have my knife blade all designed out the way I want it, have my piece of O1 steel, traced off and ready to go, and I go out to the shop, and I ain't got no saw blades! :cursing:

I wanted to cut it out on my little bandsaw, which has a metal cutting blade on it....a lousy Vermont American blade on it. Fine for thin sheet brass, but touch steel with it, and it's instantly dull...an experience I have had with most every Vermont American blade (or tap, or drill bit) I have tried. Grrrr. I don't have but one halfway decent hacksaw blade, but I really don't want to hack it out no matter how easy it cuts (it cuts really easily), so, now I have to set it aside, after getting pumped to start working on it, until I can get some new blades ordered, which drives me nuts. Oh, well.

It's a nice big 'un too.9 1/2" blade, big swoopy guard, full tang, iron bolsters, fuller groove, the whole bit.

Got a mill for that fuller? Otherwise they ain't fun to cut by hand. That 01 will cut well with any good carbon saw blade, but even better with a bi-metal. I use a bi-metal 18 TPI for that thickness, and even down to 1/16". With the thinner steel, you just have to go slow. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

It's a narrow 1/8" fuller. I figure I can rough it out with a fiber cut off wheel (Dremel) and clean it up with a round file. Not very wide, not very deep.

I'm a glutton for punishment, I guess.

A 1/8" fuller won't be that hard. Here's a suggestion you can try. Take a straight edge section of a file, grind off the teeth and C clamp it to the blade on a scribed line, and cut the groove with a curved 1/8" round file using the smooth file edge as a file guide. When the edge of your cut meets the bottom edge of the file guide your groove is 1/8" wide x by 1/16" deep. The groove doesn't have to be that deep, but it can be if you wanted. You can use a tad larger diameter file and just cut the groove to 1/8" wide.
