12% would be a pretty high percentage of tin. Regular bismuth shot is in the 3%-6% range I believe, maybe that is what the alloy was when you bought some?
As far as the available non-toxic substitutes, bismuth/tin would be the most closely related to lead as far as casting, loading, ballistics...etc
I might have to get some of the 12% and try some experiments as well. This is really interesting.
