I've just ordered my first custom gun from John Anderson, here in Tullahoma.
What I've ordered is not patterened after any particular rifle or style of rifle at all.

I've been playing around with a lot of different rifles at the local club & I like different aspects of many different rifles, so I decided 'What the hell....' & figured I'd incorporate them all into one gun.

It's a full maple stock, with a Iron mounted with a Hawken style buttplate, Southern style cheekpiece & toeplate. 15" LOP with 3¼" drop. The lock is a Bails style percussion with a semi-fancy lockplate. The barrel is a 42" .54 caliber octogon-to-round affair & I'll be having an iron nosecap & entry thimble.

Now that I write it down, it even sounds ugly to me, but I know it's what I want. It'll be light & nimble without being tiny & frail. Nicely balanced & hopefully not as pug-ugly as it sounds :hmm: :rotf:

Anyone else own oddball, wierd combinations of guns that don't follow the 'pattern'?

Yes, a Thompson Center Hawken'
:haha:
A Renegade with an Investarms 15/16 Oct to Round 20ga smoothy with a screw in choke,
A CVA Jukar,

Robattoo,
Not really wierd but different. I shoot a lot of underhammer rifles, and shotguns, and they all have typical 2 piece stock and forearm. I built one last winter that has a 1 piece full stock and 42" barrel. 13/16X42 barrel in .45 caliber with a plain maple stock. Slim, light accurate.

Yes, although it's not quite ready yet. Like you I need a much longer LOP than what factory produced rifles offer. Even though Lyman only offer their trade rifle with a RH lock and I am left handed, I found it to be a great shooter, so I sent it off to have a new stock made for it. Originally I wanted the retain the RH lock but have the new stock's cheekpiece on the right side but the builder made me a deal on a LH L&R lock that I couldn't turn down, so he changed the breechplug accordingly. I chose a half stock in cherry wood with a reddish brown finish, 15 inch LOP, LH L&R lock and the .54 Lyman barrel for my non-typical rifle.

How does a Lyman GPR flint lock with a GM Smoothbore .54 barrel sound? It looks like the standard GPR til you start looking close and realize that there's just something missing/odd/different. Works great though.

So, would a TC hawken with a Green Mountain .50, 1-28" twist, restocked with a custom designed thumbhole stock in cherry fit this catagory?

I've got a .54 Lehigh (44" swamped barrel) that has a forged iron butt-plate, side plate, triggerbow and the thimbles. I like the looks of forged furniture, and I like the lines of Lehigh flintlocks. When I tried to find any historical presidence I ran across a lot of "soft" language such as "most often in brass", "usually brass", so I took that as meaning "not always brass", and iron is the obvious alternative. ;-)

It's also stocked in cherry wood, and same thing: "normally maple", "usually maple".

The gunsmith (John Donelson) forged all the iron pieces and the flame cherry was from a tree he harvested on his own property. I think it all ties together nicely and it makes me happy to own it. That's what matters most. It is correct in spirit if not in mateials. :hatsoff:

I've got a standard answer for people who give me guff about my choice in guns or details. "Where did you ever get the idea I care what you think?"

If you're standing up before judges at a historical event, doing your best to imitate and interpretation of the past, that's one thing. But if you're following your own needs and tastes for your own reasons, their mouth noises aren't worth the spit to polish your shoes.

Absolutley & I'd love to see it!

same here. doesn't sound very traditional, but it sounds very unique and should qualify as at least a "semi-custom".

I am currently getting ready for a fly-in,self supported, moose hunting trip,so I don't have time to go through the process of learning to post pictures here. If someone who is comfortable posting pictures would like to post them for me, send me a private message with your email addy, & I'll send them to you. I haven't posted them before because it doesn't really fit the 'rules', and I haven't wanted to offend any one.
If a moderator would like to look at the pictures first and make a final decision, that would ease my mind.

I didnt think of that, sorry, wasn't trying to get you or anyone else in trouble. Good idea.

My target rifle is truely one of a kind. I have a spanish style stock, ( The ramrod channel is enclosed by the stock) a Jerry Devanderval paten breech, with a T.C. Patroit pistol lock. But back when I could see better it won a lot of shoots. :i :idunno: dunno:

Robtatto, that's exactly what I do when I build a firearm for myself. I blend everything I like into one gun, historical correctess be damned. :blah: I figure if someone doesn't like it, then they just won't get to shoot it. :blah: :blah:

I also figure if you were to go into a gunshop back in the day, and describe what you wanted in a rifle, this is what you would get anyway.

Sometimes it's good to step out of line and and find your own path. Bill

Seems like everything I build for myself is an "odd ball".
That way nobody else has one exactly like it.
I just like being different!

Link Here's a custom CVA Kentucky I messed around with a few years back. Set it up for the ex-wife, she left I kept the rifle!

This one isn't all that odd but somewhat unique. This is a Seneca with a 32" 36 cal Rayl barrel. Shown beside a standard Seneca. It does shoot very well.

As a matter of fact, thought about putting my brand new T/C Hawken in a Pecatonica maple fullstock this evening. Im about to buy the GMT .54 cal roundball drop in 32 incher and thought about doing all this at one time. Still want to retain the adjustable T/C sights...I like 'em. I hunt and they suit me..dont care what anyone thinks :blah:

How bout a walnut stocked half stocked "D" weight 31" Jaeger barrel in .62 rifled, chambers late ketland lock....
