Anyone own or shoot a Chiefs Grade? I'm very intersted in ordering one in-the-white and was looking for some feedback regarding build and component quality especially the lock.

I have an email out to them with a couple of questions but does anyone know how long the wait is for a in-the-white gun?

Thanks,

Mike

I don't own one, but a friend has one and I've shot it many a time. It is well made and the parts are of high quality. It is a 16 gauge and has taken all sorts of game--from rabbits to deer and grouse to geese.

Matt is good to deal with and he welcomes any questions you might have. I bought an Early English in kit form from him and had no problem building the gun to the "in the white stage". I lost my work area so I sent it off to Roy for final finishing.

It is a quality gun and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Mike, From what I've heard, the wait at North Star West is not long at all, especially if Matt has the barrel, in the gauge and length that you want, in stock. Go for it, for sure. Le Grand

I had a second hand one several years ago and it was a fine gun, i would not hesitate to go with North Starr.

MikeC,
My wife has a Chief's Grade ( It was Mine until she held it, right after I bought it!) and she loves it. This gun was a kit made by the fellow we got it from. The lock is great, sparks well, and has a nice crisp trigger pull. I like target work, paper and trail walks, and the gun is a little light for my taste, but it looks and functions great. I would purchase North Star West's products again.

Matt provides a quality product with excellant pre and after sales advice. I would not hesitate buying another NSW product.

I've never had one of their complete guns but I have used one of their barrels to build a smoothbore. It was the best shooting smoothie I ever had. You could hit a squirrel at forty yards with round ball and only a bead sight.

I have a 16 gauge in the Chief's grade that is my "Go-To" gun. I've harvested squirrel, turkey, geese, and deer. Also shoot some skeet with it. I purchased the trade gun just before Matt purchased North Star West. I did have a problem with the frizzen, Matt made good on the repairs, including replacing the lock springs because he felt they were "not quite right". All the work was free, so I purchased an additional main spring and a new frizzen. The gun has performed flawlessly. I'd would purchase another firearm from him.

The pics here are of a NSW Officers Bess and an original owned by a friend of mine. The details and feel of Matts gun compared to the original are stunning. The target was shot at 50yds offhand and scores at 90. This gun is a pleasure to shoot and own.The lock sparks well and Matts frizzens are good quality steel that should not need any other attention other than a face clean on an emery wheel occasionaly. The lock and springs are well made and has given good service for over 3 years now. I shoot at least 3 times a week most weeks. Just a thought, are you after a rifle or a smoothy.

I have owned a Chiefs Grade for many years. In fact it was made during the change over from NorthStar toe the original North Star West. It is one of the last guns that Curly G stocked. I bought it second ahnd after the guy that owned it decided to leave the sport!

I have never been disappointed with it, and it does it's job better than I do. Best 25 yard target I ever shot in competition with it was a 48-3X out of 50! One ragged hole from my smoothy that was nearly equal to my rifle score that day! :hatsoff:

Justmike,

I also have the officer's fusil. I like it and it is well made. Ihaven't had any prblems with it to date. When loaded with fffg, prime and main chage, it has never failed to fire. It is well made and if I were in the market for a trade gun, I would not hesistate going to North Star West.

Looking at a smoothbore. So far looks like a great deal. Thanks for the pics and replies. I'll chat with NSW and see what they say.
