Would a flint NW gun with a shortened stock and a 30" 20ga bbl make a good training gun for a child around 10 years old?

Sure it would. Just keep your loads down. There wouldn't be anything wrong with imitating .410 loads by using just half an ounce of shot over a reduced powder charge. In fact, don't go for the 30 inch barreled NW Gun. Save a couple of bucks instead and go for the 20 inch barreled Canoe Gun by North Star West. The Canoe Gun has a short barrel as well as a short buttstock. You might consider that in 24 gauge too (that's .58 caliber). A youngster would really like it. Le Grand

Shortening an adult stock does not always give a child a good shooting platform in and of itself except for length of pull. You may (probably will) need to build up the comb with moleskin to make the stock fit better to a smaller face and higher cheek bone. Moleskin can be pulled off and the "sticky" cleaned up forthwith with WD-40.

I purchased the Northwest Tradegun Sketchbook by Charles Hansen III, it contains the plans for 2/3 size tradegun. I purchased a shotgun barrel from Numrich Gun parts IIRC. It is a .58 in 26" or 28" long, I only paid about $15 for the the barrel I also bought a 26" in .68. I draw-filed the top 5 flats on the barrel and hand filed the wedding bands. There was plenty of material to work the barrel. I will drill and tap for the breech plug next and solder on the lugs. The book includes the full plans/sketches for all of the furniture so that will only cost me the price of the flat brass. I will need to buy a lock and I need a chunck of Walnut. Anyone know where I can get a cheap hunk of Walnut? I need to locate a small lock as well. Kurt/IL
