X3 on Shade's Forbes Road series. He also has a new one, "Dunmore's Folly." Just came out. I'm a bit biased because Mr. Shade actually made himself available to give me some tips on historical fiction writing. He's a really good fella, and quite dedicated to the craft.

I also really enjoy James Alexander Thom's work, having read "Follow the River" and "The Long Knives," the former about Mary Ingles Draper and the latter about George Rogers Clark.

Both of these authors have done their research extremely well, while still encompassing some really superb fiction writing.

Zane Grey's frontier trilogy; Betty Zane, The Last Trail and Spirit of the Border.

Bernard Cromwell's Sharpe series.

LJA,
I have that Zane Grey trilogy and love it.

I have an interesting anecdote that relates to that. I work at a historic museum and a couple years back we had a special exhibit of historic Bowie knives. I had the privilege of helping set it up and being there at the grand opening. While I ogled a lot of really famous knives, some owned by Theodore Roosevelt, Davy Crockett, etc. I was looking over a particular knife. I happen to read the card one day and the name Lewis Wetzel caught my eye.

I'm sorry the picture is blurry.

Here is the knife.

Since I have read of Wetzel since I was a kid, this really stood out to me.
