A few weeks ago someone asked about a scraper to inlet octagon barrels. It took me a while to find this homemade tool in my old Muzzle Blasts. I wish I had this scraper back in ’62 when I made my flinter. I hacksawed that scraper from a WWII machete. This tool is adjustable and can be used for different sized barrels. Just hog out the bulk with some box bits on the router table or with a fence and scrape the rest. I’ll bet you could get the whole thing done in a few hours instead of the few weeks it took me back then.
I’m posting another shop tool that you can build yourself. It’ll really come in handy.

Be VERY careful when trying to scrape (or plane) out your barrel channel in curly wood. You can very easily knock out big hunks of curl on the sides.

I have made several cutters like you plans suggest, but have had little luck with them on curtly maple. Perhaps if the wood were not curly & just a plain straight grain it would work but for me it hung up on every curl on all sides & there was just no way you could pull it thru. Go the other eay & it hangs on curls the other way. Thus I resorted back to scrapping out the way I did before, on flat at a time to get the barrels where I need them to lay. :hmm: Now a blade on a rotary cutter where it spun fast like a dado blade on a saw or shaper would work for this. :hmm:

I make them out of old files. I like the idea of the one above though... just wouldn't work on all types of wood.
