Hi all. Does anyone make pre-cast round balls for sale in approximately .620 or .630? TOTW offerings go from .610 to .648 nothing in between. I would like to try some before ordering a custom mold. My bore ID measures about .655 with a mic. Thanks.

If your bore measures .655 as a cylindere bore the .648 ball should work quite nicely with a .010 to .015 patch. my bore size is .665 and I have been having great success with .648 and .018 ticking or .662 bare-ball.

The .620-630 should be in the ballpark for a .655 bore.

IMHO, a .648 ball with .010 patching would be too tight.

.655- .648= .007, IMHO a .010 patch, that is .010 on each side requires .020 clearance. IMHO, there is not enough crush to such a thin patch to get the .648 ball and .010 patch combination down without a mallet.

Try Dixie, they used to carry hand cast odd ball...balls.

Maybe Eddie May or Dixon's gunshop may, or may not have something you can try.

If nothing else, try the .610 ball with a .022, or thicker patch as a place to start.

Good luck,
J.D.

If you order a mold tha casts a ball somewhere around .625-.630 you will have a ball that works with the right patching Tanner makes nice molds for around $25 or so( I haven't priced his molds for a while), they need handles and have no sprue cutter but they are very good, and cheap compared to some. You may find a bare ball with overshot card or wadding to hold it in place works well.If I had such a gun I would get a .630 mold and find whatever patching it took to work, you can find patching anywhere from heavy cotton denim of .025-.035 to light ticking at .010, wool also works for thick patching if need be.

Friendship Fall shoot starts this weekend and runs until next weekend. If anyone has the precast odd sized ball you will find them there and a place to shoot them.

Many Klatch
