I recently purchased and installed 6 Treso/AMPCO bronze nipples in my EuroArms 1858 Remington. It appears the Treso nipple has a much smaller opening at the chamber end than the original nipples that came with the pistol. Plus the Treso nipple looks to have less taper, and nicely holds a #11 cap.

What experience do you have with these, and does the smaller opening cause mis-fires, and does the reduced taper hold the fired cap on better (sometimes with the original nipple, the cap would fall and jam the cylinder after firing)? Plus I see some SS nipples for somewhat less cost, and are they as good?

I have Treso nipples on all four of my Uberti's and they all perform better with Remington#10 caps.

The smaller hole will fire just as reliably as the old nipples and the gun will be less likely to blow the hammer back as far.

As for caps being blown off of the nipples, that is the nature of the beast, so to speak.

Col. Colt added the cap fragment groove to the recoil shield of his pistols early on. The Remingtons' don't usually have as much of a problem with cap fragments because the striking part of the hammer normally fills up the slot in the frame unless the leakage thru the nipple is actually blowing the hammer back a long way.

I suspect that is what was happening on your gun with the old nipples.
The new nipples small holes will probably improve things a lot.
(If I'm wrong, don't forget to post, "Ole' Zonie was WRONG! The small holes in my new Tresco nipples didn't help at all!". :)
