Hey Stumpkiller, do you think it would be possible to have the members purchase bulk flints. In other words could we as members pony up some cash to buy flints in bulk. Each member has a number and it could be easy to track who bought what, so forth and so on...just a thought.

Another ML web site has an arrangement with one of their vendors where a "special flint buy" is offered once a year to the membership...the prices are so low they alledgedly don't make any money, but hope to get other ML related business from the membership in return...ie: I bought bulk bags of 3/4" black english flints for $.69/each.

Maybe the Forum's advertiser could make a similar offer?

I got the same notice via email from TOTW about flint and powder going up. I guess the Christams wish list will change before the fat red suited man flies in this direction???

Just had a feeling powder would go up because of the latest explosion at Goex. How much it'll go up is anyones guess? :hmm:

As far as the flints go, I guess it's time to start making my own. It's true, you can pick it up off the ground out here...

Wish we had flint laying around here. We have Obsidian, and it will work in a pinch, but it does break easy. Have a box of large Obsidian pieces here that a guy supposedly wanted in Tx. and i was going to trade him for some of the flints he knapps, but he backed out on me.

I found a big chunk of flint that I've been hoarding for a rainy day, so to speak. I guess it's time to have one of my friends show me the right way to make a flint or two or more for my rifles. I know a couple of guys who do this already, so here's hoping I'm not to old to learn a new trick???

I realize it'll take some practice, but it's a big hunk of flint! One of the guys offered me $15.00 dollars for it at one time... We'll work out a deal to where we both get some flints and I get educated... I figured if he offered $15.00 dollars, it's probably worth five times that. It's big, it's flint...

I have about 13 pieces of Obsidian. Most of them are fist sized or larger. There must be about 25 lbs of it or so. Some of it is an orange color and some is black.

Anybuddy tried "chert" in ther flinters??.. I tried it with my "steel" and git good sparks with it, I've even seen arrowheads knaped out'a tha stuff.

ATTENTION!!!!! Due to the world situation ie: so much of it now covered in concrete....ROCKS are becomeing scarce. Therefore , we are forced to increase our price! If a new supply of rocks becomes available, we will gladly adjust our price accordingly. thank you

Is this something like what TOW said in their notice?

Flints may end up like beer....it's sometimes cheaper to buy a beer than a Coke-Cola or caps instead of flints.

Where IS my old caplock??? ::

Have to see what Claude thinks on his.

Now that I've had a chance to sleep on it I see other complications. It's not like we can have them shipped here to Muzzleloading Forum Towers and have the distribution department re-package them for divvying up. Claude is actually an eight-year old kid who runs this out of his basement and we moderators are just artificial pseudo-intelligent subroutines that provide random answers.

Then there's collecting the funds, postage, etc. It's bigger than it at first seemed.

FYI...the working arrangement that's already in place is that an advertiser agrees to some sort of bulk purchase special sale, and it's announced on the Forum.

Per the announcement instructions, any member who wants to participate simply mails their quantity / size requests with payment directly to the advertiser, the advertiser direct ships the orders to the respective members.
:peace:

Just received word from Track of the Wold that the price of Tom Fuller's flints is going to rise the first of the year. :(

I just ordered a 100 bag. Can't have too much lead or too many flints.

Howdy,
When you buy a bulk bag of flints, are there very many in the bag that you find you can not use? I have often thought about going the bulk route, but did not know if I would be able to use most all of them. I buy mine at stores or shoots when I can hand pick them.

Actually they're all useable...to be sure and get the maximum life out of them, first thing I do is take a moment and sort them into two piles:
Flat top flints and Hump back flints

I put the flat top flints is a separate place and use them for the most important things like hunting...since they're relatively thin & flat they can be flipped over back and forth multiple times and give the longest possible life and number of shots out of them...the thin, flat shape allows you to use them bevel up and bevel down without the leading edge of the flint changing it impact point on the frizzen very much.

Then I use the mizzy wheels that stumpy mentioned to cut off the high, raised hump off the backs of the other flints essentially making them into flat topped flints too...takes about 30 seconds per flint, and I use them for range trips.

Stump.... I would participate in a bulk flint purchase if it were arranged, just as Roundball suggested...it is actually a good idea.

Howdy,
Thanks Stumpkiller and Roundball for the info. about the Mizzy Wheels. I'm going to check into getting some of the wheels. Then I'll check into the bulk flints. Like was stated; "You can never have enough flints or lead". Has anyone compared the bulk prices between track of the Wolf and Vernon Davis from Ohio. Vernon has good prices on most of his stuff.
