I have posted about shooting a 4" group with a smoothie at 100 yards. Is it that report which is being discussed? I don't recall any other, and I read most things posted in any forum.

Didnt wanna name names. Thank you!

Like I said I have no problem believing that. Every once in awhile a guy gets a Gem to even out all the mulearses that come his way. I have a CVA .50 that will shoot 2" at 90 yds very reliably. Thats rifled of course but it is one of the most accurate guns I have owned. It has a issue now with a sudden 50lb trigger pull and I have not alot of knowledge on repairs. I will look over once when I get time and then a very cool member here has offered to inspect and I will ship it the 5K miles fed ex. Just love that gun.

I have issues shooting offhand with my Tulle. Personally I found that chopping off the first four inches of the barrel greatly increased my ability to hit the target. Now I need to work on strength and the groups should come in time.

Good luck Greg. I was actually handling (fondling?) my fowler the last half hour before hopping back on here. Yes, at this late hour :youcrazy: :idunno: . My optimism grew quite a bit yesterday after shooting good groups with her. I'm chalking it up to the modified cheek weld and more proper follow through, but maybe more so, to a mindset that I WILL shoot better with her.

I like the gun as well as any other I've owned. Simple, old technology that works and brings fur and feathers to the bag with a little extra work compared to the droves of modern techno (SWAT-like) hunters afield these days. There satisfaction in doing it the old way, sure enough. Enjoy the journey.

Best regards, Skychief

I shot a 42 model bess for years. If I got down on it like a rifle it would whack me good! I would hold my head way back and not really touch the stock at all,I got pretty good and took a few 1 st place TG matches and beat a few rifles too.It was a very odd hold but I could see the whole barrel and didnt get thumped.I shoot a couple different TGs now a northwest and an english TG both I can get down on ,but not a tight weld.

Spence,

Please correct me if I am mistaken, but haven't you posted that you use a wad over the powder and then a patched ball to get that kind of accuracy?

Gus

Yes. My load for best accuracy with ball at any distance in any of my smoothbores is powder-1/8" hard card-1/2" cushion wad saturated with beeswax/lard- PRB in a patch lubed with the same.

The guns I use this combination in are all 20 gauge, one double and one single barrel, all flintlock. The one I use for long range shooting is a smooth rifle by Jackie Brown, 46" DOM or tubing barrel. I only shoot home-cast .600" balls.

Spence

Thank you Spence,

I suspect some folks, like me, never thought to use a card over the powder and the saturated cushion wad before the PRB.

I know I didn't when shooting my Brown Bess Carbine and only used powder and the PRB. The only time I used wads and cards was when I fired shot in it and I didn't think to saturate the wads back in the 1970's.

Gus

I shot my bess for years with a paper cartridge, using the paper around the ball and the torn off paper ( never with my teeth thank you ) wadded down on the ball, worked for me.I sold bess and have relaced it with 58 and a 62 tradeguns. They seem to like a wad of tow over the powder and a patched ball.I only use a cotton bedsheet for patch because I hate getting a ball half way down and pounding it down ,and theyre really easy to pull if need be.

I don't know why I did, either. I had been loading for shot that way, and when I decided to take a flintlock double gun javelina hunting with ball, I started working up a load. That was in 1990, and no information about shooting ball in a smoothbore was available, I knew nobody who had ever done it. I tried it that way first, just substituted PRB for the shot, and the groups were so good I never tried anything else.

Since then I've fired everything but the kitchen sink in my smoothbores with good results, but when I seriously want best accuracy with no question, I go back to that original combination.

Skychief, we seem to have hijacked your nice thread. Sorry 'bout that, our bad.

Have you had the fowler out again?

No apologies necessary Spence. :hatsoff:

I regret to inform that I've not made it out since my last report. I have, since, taken inventory of my .600 ball stash. Sad to say, the needle on my gallon sized iced cream container of them, is nearing "E". :shocked2:

Not to fear, I plan on a casting session soon to reinforce the dwindling supply.

Surprised my distant neighbors haven't stopped in to check on me, for the lack of shooting. :haha:

Hope to wake them up soon and report back.

Thanks for thinking of me, Skychief

I found time to shoot for a couple of hours this evening. This time I shot offhand from a distance of 35-40 yards. Every shot sent was minute of deer. I shot a group of five at 40 yards and am happy to say I kept them in a 4" group. I know many here can do that with their fowlers, but, it's progress for me.

I sent one from 60 yards and clean missed an 18" gong :shake: . Baby steps.

I've said before, there is a certain indescribable satisfaction that I get with this smoothbore that my rifles no longer QUITE provide. Working on my cheek weld tonight brought success and the best part, it's feeling more natural. Not natural, but, more natural.

It's a thrill to see a 60 caliber hole appear through the smoke at the intended mark with no rifling and no rear sight. And even more intriguing, from a gun that will handle shotloads for small game and turkey. Does it get more versatile than that? :idunno:

Just wanted report that I'm working for more progress

Best regards, Skychief

Good for you our friend :hatsoff:

Try putting the butt on the shoulder joint as opposed to just in from the joint.

B.

Thanks for asking Nate. I took the above advice from a buddy and see how it helps. No smacking of the cheek bone whatsoever.

Thank you, Skychief

I'm back at it today with the "fowler". To this point things have gone well, except, I tried to use too thick of patching for my second shot and stuck the ball. Couldn't pound it down for love nor money.

Had a fun time trying to extract it with a ball puller, but, prevailed in the end. :patriot:

I'm in the middle of a fried chicken and iced tea break from the action. A guy has to keep his strength up if he expects to concentrate on offhand smoothie perfection. Plus I just like chicken and tea :blah: .

That's it for now. Just reporting in how I'm taking advantage of the milder temps before we get back to the mid nineties this week.

Ya'll take care now, y'hear?

Best regards, Smoothbore Skychief. :haha:
