The dates published in the Ohio hunting rule book for the ML season are Jan 7-10.

However the Ohio Administrative Code says
"(e) Statewide muzzleloading deer season is open from the second Saturday after New Years Day through the following Tuesday"
http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/1501%3A31-15-11

The second Saturday is January 14.

The rule book says it's only a guide, the complete rules are in the Ohio Revised Code and Ohio Administrative Code. Rumor is the ODNR isn't sure how to handle this.

So we Buckeyes might get some extra quality time with our favorite smoke pole.

COLUMBUS, OH ”“ Governor John Kasich today issued an emergency rule reiterating that the statewide muzzleloader season for deer is January 7-10, as published in the 2011-12 Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations booklet.

The emergency rule was requested by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife because the dates printed in the hunting regulations handbook were inconsistent with the Ohio Administrative Code.

The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.

Remember the good old days of "Primitive Weapons"?
4 days of smokepole is a joke compared to some other states. I hope one day they separate IL muzzleloaders from Primitive weapons and give us a couple of months to hunt, there would be a sparse few taking advantage of that and it would likely take a pretty loud voice to get notice.

There is some talk of an early (October)muzzleloader season in Zone C, does only. It isn't real popular idea with bow hunters. I suggested to my county game warden making it traditional only, he thought that was an interesting idea. I doubt it will happen but we'll see.

I have been a traditional bowhunter pretty much my whole life and I am fine with giving equal time to any traditional method. You would be hard pressed to call any archery equipment primitive anymore kind of like the IL evolution. Crossbows and releases weren't always legal but they changed that 30 years ago. My fingers are crossed.
