I got my shipment of maxi balls and was checking the boxes. the lube has dried and cracked on them. I tried boiling the old lube off which most of it came off with no bullet deformation. Ive made my old lube out of beeswax and Crisco which has worked well. would yall shoot them as is? ill use a wad take the old lube off then re add more lube. I really wanted to try the lee alox that others has tried but whatever they lubed these bullets with does not want to come off. these were new unoped boxes 14 boxes total

I have had tons of Hornady Great Plains bullets with the lube dried and cracking. I loaded em and shot em, the group remained the same. I assume the lube melts right quick at ignition and the lube does its job :idunno:

While I don't shoot conicals, I was given a couple boxes of Maxi and Maxi hunter slugs. The lube was cracked and dried on them just like you describe. Now, if I were to want to use them, I'd simply NOT try to take the old lube off; but would put my own lube on the bullets just as they are. If dried lube stays on the bullets I don't think it will matter. Just lube with your own mix and test them.

That's what I do. I have 3 boxes of Hornady Great Plains conicals left from deer hunting days and all the lube is dried. I just add a bit of melted SPG bullet lube from TOW around the skirts and they work great and are fairly easy to short start at the muzzle. Don't shoot them much anymore, just in my .50 Renegade and at the occasional target when I get bored and want to do something different.

I'd shoot em. I wouldn't put a ton of effort into getting the old lube off. You could touch up the the lube grooves with your homemade lube, SPG, or (gasp) bore butter if you want, but it should be just fine. I don't think liquid Alox is a very good option for Maxi Balls personally.

My bud who shoots so many of them claims that they have always come out of the box that way, no matter how long ago he bought them. He has a tube of Wonder Lube or something and just rubs extra on top of the cracked stuff. Seems to work great.

Yep

Just in case you need further validation, this is from the FAQ section of the No Excuses Muzzleloading Bullets webpage (highly regarded bullets by the way). A different bullet obviously but the principle is the same.

What if the lube appears to have dried out and looks a bit chalky? First off, you need to shoot more! Seriously though, the lube and bullet will shoot just fine. If you want to touch it up with a little Bore-Butter, that’s fine but isn’t necessary.

X2 on the bore butter. I've got a couple of old tubes of that stuff and that's what I used.
Seemed to work just fine.

Just thought I'd throw another snake on the fire. The boys over at the British Militaria Forum who shoot Sniders and other early BP cartridge guns have found that dipping the bullet in "Udderly Smooth," a skin moisturizer that contains mostly lanolin, just before chambering seems to improve accruacy and leaves the bore nearly spotless. Have no idea of this stuff would show a benefit in a muzzleloader, but if y'all have an "enquiring mind" you might want to fool with it.
