I believe you will like Olde E. That is all I have shot for quite some time. What I found when switching from Goex is about exactly what Zonie said. You will likely want to reduce your charge a little. Not sure how much cleaner it is.
The only negative is it produces less smoke.
Have fun and let us know what you think.
Take care,
Ed

I found the same results with Swiss, to get back down to my sighted in distance I backed off the Swiss about 10 grains. And it does burn a lot cleaner. I fugured that might be because of the granulation change (2f to 3f) but for either reason, I do very much like the Swiss and will probably buy that for my next batch.

Oh no, I love lots of BP smoke. When I was seriously Civil War re-enacting, it was something to see thousands of Enfields and Springfields and Mississippi Rifles and 12-pounder Napoleons filling the air with ground-hugging white smoke. I may have to go back to the Goex.

Part of apparent cleaner burn, less fouling would be the smaller charge impact.

If you are fond of Swiss you may want to try Olde E as well. Similar performance with a slightly smaller price tag and made in the US.

I got this powder on a trade with a fellow club member, out the door investment for two pounds was less than a pound of GOEX. And when I do order, I will throw in a couple of pounds of OE just to try. THANKS!

Around 2008 +/- a couple years, William Knight wrote a made available a 100+ page, well written, research paper on black powder and the various manufacturers.

At some point I was really interested and downloaded all his writings from a BP mailing list where he made them available. He has a great description of what a "Sporting" BP is. Too bad GOEX does not really provide any data on the advantages of the new product . . . not the best marketing.

The documents are a great point in time comparisons of GOEX, Swiss, Elephant and I think KIK. I really wish he was still around to update his results and add in Olde Eynsford and maybe Schutzen.

I looked for his various writings online today and they seem to be gone . . . hope his is OK and I am really glad I saved his work offline. People say the internet is forever, but is is not. Servers go way, people move on and resources get lost.

I’d certainly love to read that if possible.

According to one fellow’s research “pistol grade” powder was developed (Hazard’s was the one mentioned) and used during the later end of the Civil War and was a part of how Colt could get a very effective weapon from a reduced chamber space (ie the 1860 Army from the Dragoon). The comparison was shown with pine board penetration.

And because of this I’ve been a bit curious what was generally used in the Walkers and Dragoons, both the brand/type of powder and granulation used.

I was gifted 2 lbs of 2f this Saturday! Never shot the real stuff before.

Well, now I get to test Olde Eynsford in a new .50-cal GPR 1-in-60 twist I bought new this week. Got it new-in-box with a serial number about 400 before the Lyman barrel recall serial numbers.
Can't wait to try it out, and it's getting warm just at the right time.
I've been wanting a GPR for a really long time and finally pulled the trigger. Going to start with the same set-up I use with the T/C Renegade on PRBs and go from there to work up the best load. Only got to shoot 3 PRBs in my Renegade last weekend at the range with the OE before the rains came and washed me out. This is gonna be fun!!

Already like the Olde Eynsford. Took it out today and used it in my new Great Plains Rifle and got this on my second target right out of the box. I'm thrilled with the OE ffg AND my new toy. I'll take my T/C Renegade out next time and try the OE through it too. I may retire my regular Goex ffg after 40-plus years.

Third time out with my .50 GPR and got these targets. Really pleased with how OE shoots and even more pleased with this rifle. Thought I would have trouble with the stock sights but having zero problems. Shot these with 50 grains OE ff, .490 ball, .015 linen Ox-Yoke pre-lubed patches, both at 35 yds. and then at 50 yds. Pretty decent breeze quartering from right to left. I normally use .015 linen patches with TOW mink oil, but forgot to bring mink oil tin, so I used what was in my bag ”” the Ox-Yoke pre-lubed. They worked out much better than I thought they would. Shot these off the bench using sand bags.
I really like the Olde Eynsford ff and I think I've found my PRB target loads. Now, need to try my hand (and old eyes) at 100 yds. That's going take me a while to get decent at.
