there were, but it wasn't until some Texas Rangers survived an engagement with hostile natives they were not taken super serious
anyways, Samuel Walker was one of those soldiers and he wouldn't shut up about how awesome the revolvers were so his superiors had him contract with Colt for some more guns. What they came up with was to become known as the Walker pistol.

At least that is what I recollect from what I was told.
