Spikebuck, many years ago I was hunting during the regular rifle season when I heard a rifle go off not far away. A few minutes later a doe came along with a front leg dangling and a terrible wound across the front of her chest. I immediately fired and put the doe out of its misery. The thing was that at that time does were not in season. Some creep had not only made an illegal shot but had caused a terrible injury that would have taken hours or days to finally kill the poor creature.
