Big screw up on my part, I put a primitive sight on my TC Hawken 54 cal.
That is not the problem. The only thing I don’t like about TC Hawken rifles is the big boxy sights. They are the only thing that messes up an otherwise 100% totally HC/PC rifle. I had to put that in there for Mr. J. D., it’s a joke J. D. Anyway the primitive sight is so low, it shoots way, way below POA. You can’t file enough off the front sight to correct it. Found this one out the hard way cause I had to put the stock TC sight back on but now there is an ugly dovetail underneath it. I am searching for a taller primitive sight.

The same exact sights I was going to suggest. I used them when I owned a T/C. Very good sights!

It is hard to tell from the picture but it doesn't look like they are tall enough either. Maybe they are though.

You did swap both the front and rear sight, right?

If you need to use the front sight that came from TC with the"correct" rear sight you want to install then you will, of course, need to remove most of the blade to match the rear.

You need to look at a few antique rifles with the original sights so you will know what to do. Original rifles very often had what some modern shooters would consider unacceptably low sights. Most sights of original rifles were only 1/16 inch to 3/32 inch above the plain of the barrel not the 1/4 inch and higher that many modern shooters seem to feel we need.

100% HC/PC...Not to argue but they are not even close to a true Hawken. With regard to the sight make your own from brass or look at TOTW they have oversize "builders" sights that are oversize so they can be cut back and modified to shape.

I did know I would have to lower the front sight but I would have to file it off to get the POA back! The factory TC sight on the 1" barrel sorta sits on top of the barrel. The 15/16" barrel has the sight more or less wrapping around the barrel.
It ain't my first poh-pa, probably won't be my last.

This was meant to be a joke for "J. D." not to be taken literally. He was searching for a comment from me similar to this.

Solider on a piece of thin stock to the back of the rear sight to bring it higher..... file a new sight groove after....that will solve your height issue and save the dove tail.

this sight was also too low--added the height to this one ..Good luck

The TC adjustable sights sighting groove is about 1/2 above the barrel flat and the top of the TC front sight is about 3/8 above the barrel flat.

If your new rear sight sighting groove is about 3/8 above the barrel flat the front sight should be around 1/4 - 5/16 above the barrel flat.

Either file your existing front sight down or buy another front sight and install it. Then have fun tweaking its height until the rifle is shooting to the point of aim at the distance you want to use.

The T-C front sight also has enough meat in it to file down low to the barrel, then slot for a blade sight with a thin file. Just did one. Easy job.
