Over the top deer hunting with a HOWITZER!! Okay I love deer hunting, and I love the big guns, but this is a bit more than I would ever dream of attempting, and I took a wild with a spear! { I was much younger and foolish at the time. }

Just :m2c:

Here in NY we have to use a single projectile. At least we have SOME restrictions still on what a muzzleloader is. :haha:

Well, ol' "Pathfinder" Fremont used his 12 pounder to hunt bison on his second expedition. Lobbed balls into the herds. Not particularly sporting, but I guess it fed the men. :rolleyes:

Let's see Stumpy....My best guess;
Deer was running from left to right........
The hunter was using his "very fast, ultra reliable, blitz snell, speed loader" and couldn't stop with just one, or two, or even three shots? :crackup:

He actually fired the "follow-up's" before the aimed shot? :what:

When I was stationed in Alabama, in certain counties, the shotgun, w/ought or double ought, was the "only" gun you could use if you wanted to hunt at all. Such sights were very common.......And, there was not as much meat damage as you might think.

i had a friend from N.Y. city that hunted with me back in the 80's in N.J. with a shotgun had some buck shot and some slugs....and shot a buck that kept trying to get up and him kept firing then reloaded while the deer was still trying to get up....him firing till it died and the deer looked like it was shot with a sub-machine gun....there was bout 20 - 30 holes all over it....glad i hunted with a bow back then...........bob

Every year I see deer that have been ruined by hunters who don't trust their aim or the shotgun slug (which is equivalent to a Brown Bess and PLENTY for one shot kills). I swear there are hunters who think deer change colors or a score is supposed to flash over them when you connect. Worst I ever saw was from a pump shotgun with extended magazine. Eight one-ounce slugs through a small buck. Looked like a road-pizza. :(

I either hear single shots or five shot bursts throughout the season. One bozo within earshot last year must have a 9mm, because there would be 18 "pops" just as fast as he could dump them out. Happened several times. Didn't hear from him this year. Hopefully someone took it away from him. :curse:

Funniest event was 20 some years ago when a huge field had a long hedgerow that bisected it. A single group (all members of the farmer's family) had four young hunters spaced along it at sunrise. A huge buck started at one end and ran the gauntlet: 20 shots in about that many seconds. Not a drop of blood in the snow afterwards. :crackup: Farmer Berry got a lot of mileage telling the story of his "idiot son and the three nephews." He also bulldozed the hedgerow.

I sometimes forget I can take a second shot when I hunt with my centerfires. :: Even my double barreled shotgun on birds. :shake: I used to make it a point to double tap deer moving through cover; just in case. In some spots around here, if a deer makes it 150 yards after being hit there is an excellent chance two other hunters will have fired on it by then. :shocking: I try to avoid those places. These must be the same sports that stand shoulder-to-shoulder on Catherine's Creek for the first day of trout season. Not my idea of fun, thanks anyway.
