This time of year isn't much of an issue, of course, but most of the year down here in the South it's so hot that over-ball grease goes liquid real quick, drips out of the cylinder out the holster and down yer leg, or just over yer knuckles. I've played around with adding bee's or other wax, that sort of thing, but have never been happy with the results.

How 'bout you other wheelgun shooters in the hot & humid parts of the country? I just decided wonder wads are the way to go. How do y'all handle it?

A tight fitting ball and a felt wad overpowder negates the need for overball grease. I use both Wad and Grease until it gets hot, then I just use the Overpowder wad.

I shoot an Old Army.

Wonder wads are the way to go although I've had good luck with a stiff mix of bee's wax and olive oil in 90 degree weather.

I live about 80 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and use the same Beeswax and olive oil mixure. I have used when the temp was went up to 99 degrees last summer, hog hunting and no drips, no mess. Side benefit is that it also protects from the high humidity also.

Being one who hates the mess that greases make, I've always opted for Hoppe's or Ballistol over Crisco or Bore Butter. Same with revolvers, I'd rather use a wad under the ball. It's just easier and less messy. Seems to help accuracy a bit too.

Even here in the north it gets messy after a few shots. I use wads as well but it makes it almost as expensive as shooting a cartridge gun :youcrazy:

What can you do? Just go with the flow I guess, I shoot my revolver about 5 times a year so the price of wads doesn't kill me.

hey homesteader, wads are the way to go, you can buy a punch at a craft shop and punch your own out of waxed felt. on the other hand, pre-packaged wonder-wads are sure convenient to use. a bag does last me a long time.

Kid is right. It's very easy and cheap to make your own. www.durofelt.com has felt cheap and you can get punches almost anywhere. I bought most of mine from the local harbor freight store. Vegetable fiber gasket material works amazingly well too. It soaks up more lube than felt and it scrapes fouling better. I don't remember where I ordered mine from, but the better auto shops would probably have it locally.

After 40 years of using crisco over the ball I learned to use cornmeal over the powder and leave the ball nakid from a Texacan on the SSAS forum. Works great, much neater. Cheap, and you can use it instead of fish fry to fry your fish, shrimp, and soft-shell crabs in a pinch.

you could use the cornmeal and the crisco. would smell like biscuits baking every time you touched off a round! :bull:

I dropped grease and went to over powder felt wads. Much better where I live 80 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.

Like 'Plink' I cut my own wads out of 100% wool felt obtained from the excellent durofelt.com and dip them in a melted mixture of 60 grams tallow + 60 grams Olive Oil + 30 grams bees wax. I use these wads under the ball and don't bother with anything over the ball. This mixture also works well as an overball grease. If it's very hot in your part of the World you can always stiffen up on the beeswax and lower the Olive Oil content.

I stopped using Wonder Wads due to the expense and, being a dry powder lube, I didn't find them that good at keeping the fouling soft. It's also more satisfying to make your own.

Tight Wad :hatsoff:
