I noticed that Roundball and others have mentioned using Wonder Wads in their loading data.

Is this to improve accuracy or other reasons?

I noticed Wonder Wads are lubed with Lube 1000+. If a rifle was loaded using Wonder Wads, will the lube soak into the powder if the rifle was left loaded over the weekend while hunting? Since I use teflon patches, I normally leave it loaded over the weekend where it stays in my truck.

The reason that I ask is that I got out a T/C 54 1/66" Roundball barrel this weekend that has not been shot in 15 years or so. I decided that I would use it for deer hunting.

Used 80 grains of 2F, .015 teflon patch and .530 ball and 3 shots shots later it was patterning like a shotgun. The patches were checked and they are cut and burned. The gun was previously used by son for matches. I do not remember the patches being cut years ago when he was shooting it, but I know he was not using 80 grains in matches either.

The gun is shooting high and I went to lower the rear sight and it is as low as it will go, in fact is touching the barrel. Thus a new front sight is needed.

So, was wondering about Wonder Patches.

I don't know about the Wonder patches but I found that a felt overpowder pad tightened up the groups noticeably. I use a felt wad with a drop of Go-Jo atop over powder then load my pubed PRB.
I dry patch after every shot when plinking because I hunt with a fouled barrel which I've dry patched then loaded again.

A lubed wonderwad should help out quite a bit by protecting the patch from being destroyed. You may also want to try a smaller ball and a thicker patch. In my .54 GPR, I use 80gr 3f. .015 patch and .530 RB and I needed a felt wonderwad to prevent the patch from being destroyed. I have since switched to a cast .527 round ball and pillow ticking and I no longer need the wonderwad.

They are simply a convenience for me. Mixing and matching components and methods will eventually help you discover the combo that's right for your shooting style and your gun.

Interesting feedback on your Lyman 54 Russianblood! Mine started out liking .530 balls with .015 WW prelubes or .535/.010. After a couple of hundred shots it developed a preference for .535 balls and the .015 Wonder wad. I couldn't even seat that combo when the gun was new, and even now it takes a sharp rap on the short starter to get it going. But man, what an improvement over the .530/.015.

See what I mean, Richard? It's not necessarily that WW's are any better than anything else, but when they work well in your gun and they're easy, why not use them?

My TC 1:66" RB barrels always do noticeably better when I use .018" prelubed pillow ticking patches instead of .015" patches...and for higher power hunting loads I always add an Oxyoke wad to keep things tight and accurate.

Others and Roundball,

Thanks for the information.

I am going to try some .018 teflon patches as soon as I can get a higher front sight. Going to order some Wonder Wads today.

Roundball, will the Lube 1000+ soak into the powder if left loaded over the weekend?

It's raining in East Texas, may not be great news in other places, but it is desperately needed here.

Crime does not pay, neither does farming.

Thanks

No...Wonderlube 1000 (Oxyoke's brand name) and Natural Lube 1000 (TC's brand name under contract with Oxyoke) are the same lube and what is called a "natural lube" at that.

Made expressly for use with muzzleloaders, it does not have any effect on powder...have personally had loads in my rifles for hours at a time over the past 15 years, and they fire right off perfectly when called for
