Well it was bound to happen, guess I'm very lucky it took 28 years to happen. I came home for the first time with an unused tag. The herd is decimated, think we saw 8 deer the whole time there. My Walkers covered a lot of ground and never kicked up a deer. I spent a most of my time in my blind watching squirrels. Sad whats going on over there now.

I could have tagged one and kept the streak going if I used a scoped unmentionable but it was more important to me to do it with my flintlock. It just wasn't ment to be this year.

Sorry about the bleak season start Swamp Rat. I'm just amazed that the game managers managed to "manage" the population. Probably helped that it was on an island. I'm trying to get some seedlings to grow on my Vermont place and the deer have eaten every single one of the 500 I planted last fall. The next step is to cover them with wire but I suspect that lead fencing might be the only way to give them a running start. Best to you on the rest of your season. GC

Hang in there Swamp Rat! Better days is coming, just gives you a better excuse to go back...

I just don't like being lied to.
If the objective is to kill off the deer herd, then say so. Don't hide behind sound deer management because it is not. Back in the 80's it was estimated to be at 70+ deer per square mile. They would have a quota that was reached on both the north and south ends every year, usually from 55 to 100 Does. With an either sex tag, all other animals did not count towards the quota so the kill total could get up there. Winter die offs became almost nonexistent.

We've had high quotas set the last few years. Theres no Enforcement presence at all over there now. The Caretaker now lives off the Island which means it's a free for all for any poacher now. Some how coyotes have been introduced and taken hold on the Island.

Our wonderful nonhunting Biologist in charge just does not have a clue. She drives around once or twice a year with a high power spot lite and counts eyes, gets a number and after some fancy math comes up with a total number for the herd. This year she counted 49 animals Tuesday night. I've been there in the past when they counted 180, 200+. She counts 49 then proclaims theres 300 deer on the Island or 50 per square mile. Only down by 10 animals from last years 310. This is total :youcrazy: :shake: She never walks the woods and sees what we see, apples piled up under trees rotting away, acorns laying on the ground uneaten. Only one reason for that, the deer are not there to eat them. We covered about 300 acres and never kicked up a deer, thats just unheard of.

They need to get into a Helicopter with infrared and count bodys and stop guessing at it. :shake:

by yer picture of the woods there i couldn't see a browse line so far up from the ground where the deer eat off the trees, sure sign of not many deer around :v ................bob

That spot I was in always produced deer. It slopes down to the first bunker and theres probably 100+ english oaks in that area, it rained acorns the whole time I was on stand. The deer have heavy trails going right/left through there. I was setup on the best trail about 30 yards out in front of me. Problem was there was no real fresh sign.

Swampy sayed..""I just don't like being lied to."""
