My brother found a PA longrifle at an estate sale it is 45 caliber the barrel was made by WM long and has an ashmore lock the the guy running the sale said to make a reasonable offer anyone have any idea what it would be worth ? The gun was made in the late 50s there are no other markings on the barrel the t gun is in really good shape with a brass patch box anybody have an idea?

Are you sure the barrel wasn't made by Wm Large? It might be stamped with an "L" on the muzzle.

Large barrels have an almost "cult" following. If it's in good shape that alone could be worth a couple/few hundred bucks.

Simply having that barrel doesn't help with where it was built, by whom, or even if they did a good job.

Bill Large was one of the handful of muzzleloading barrel makers back before Redford created the craze, so they ended up everywhere.

Recently I saw two flintlocks with Wm Large's barrels, both had just a simple carving behind the cheekpieces and overall condition of both was about 95% with barely visible minor scratches and patina on the barrel. Locks looked like a large Silers on both. Both with brass furniture and pathboxes. One had few German silver inlays. Both were stocked in tiger maple and were sold for 1150.00 and 1300.0 accordingly. One was in .50 and the other one in .54. Very pretty rifles. Maker wasn't specified. Those rifles sold in less than 72hrs as I was watching them closely on gb.
I guess someone got a great deal since I'm reading everywhere that Large's barrels are so good. Btw I am in contact with Mr Ls grandson and we chat occassionaly.

Hope all this helps you determine how much you want to spend. Pictures will help a lot for sure.
