Hey guys, I'm new to the board and even newer to Flintlocks. I've been researching FL's and am almost ready to buy my first. I am a southpaw so my options are limited. I am trying to decide btwn the Lyman Deerstalker or the Trad PA Pellet.
Lyman is a little more exp and has iron sights.
PA is less money, removable breach and fiber sights. I've been told I could get by with the Trad PA but Lyman makes an overall better gun and I could add after markets fiber sights to it.
Any and all info and opinions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think the Pellet gun has a fast twist that would lock you into modern bullets...PRB's can be a very rewarding experience as you begin the rocklock journey.

The Lyman Deerstalker comes with very nice hunting sights. You won't have to replace them.
You don't need a removeable breech. It's a silly feature best reserved for the evil muzzlloaders that have "in" in their name.
I have a Deerstalker in .54 flintlock. It's a great shooter with ignition comparable to a caplock.

Go with the Lyman. You won't regret it.

 I got a Lyman Deerstalker, flint last month and have been shooting .50 roundballs through it a lot. It a very accurate gun and has excellent hunting sights. After replacing the stock vent liner with an RMC(they come coned, the touchhole is larger, and they use an allen wrench), the ignition is very fast-almost as fast as my percussion guns. I highly recommend it for a hunting gun.

Ditto on the Deerstalker.
Not a bad little gun and very PC for what I do.

I bought a Lyman deer stalker in 54 cal flint from Midsouth shooter supply in December for 275 plus shipping It has a 24 inch barrel and shoots very well that is comparable to the price of the traditions and I think a much better gun. You canb also put green mountain barrels on it should you desire.

The best price so far is from Midsouth shooters at $304, 316 with shipping. I thought that was pretty good. I was told that the rear sight is not adjustable, is that true? Is there anything else I will DEFINATELY need as soon as I order the Lyman to same some trials and errors?

Deerstalker sights are adjustable.

If you're used to shooting sidelocks, a flintlock needs no special supplies except for priming powder (4f real BP), flints, pan brush, and a vent pick.

I just checked Midsouth shooters 54 cal rt hand deer stalker is 301 plus shipping for your info I have no loyality to either company and buy from both

I have a Traditions PA Pellet, which is my first BP rifle. It is a decent shooter and I got a deer with it here in our PA flintlock season. That said, if I had to do it over I would probably get a Lyman rifle. Nothing wrong with the Traditions gun, but the Lyman just seems like better quality at about the same price.

The rear sight is adjustable but you need a small flat screwdriver to adjust the elevation and the windage is moved on a Dovetail.I like the sights on mine.
