View attachment 20231 View attachment 20231 Today was the last day of the PA. rifle deer season. Its buck only the first week and buck or doe the second week.
I hunted with my daughter several days. She killed a doe with her unmentionable rifle last Sat. I managed to take to does with my Great plains rifle. The first was a decent size, the second a little small. I was slow hunting and came up on it and shot as it stood up, didn't realize haw small it was. We saw several bucks but none that met the requirement of having at least three antler points on on side.
Flintlock only deer season starts in 12 days and Ill be back out. I have one more doe tag and my buck tag. With a little luck Ill take one or two more.
Excuse the punkin suit. You have to wear florescent orange in the regular season. In flintlock season its not required and I ditch it for wool cloths in dark colors. I have never not once ever encountered another hunter in the late flintlock season.
Good luck. Good hunting.

Good job.

I'm also from Pa. I live in wmu 5C. Here buck and doe run concurrently. I hunted locally and was able to make it out 4 times. Saw many does, but no bucks. I usually pass on does the first week. Unfortunately, I wasnt presented any shots this season. Took the Flintlock out 3 times, but did use a modern slug gun one time after I broke my ramrod. Oh well. Flintlock season is in two weeks so I have more time to get one. 3 seasons ago, it took until the last hour of the last day of Flintlock season before I scored.

I hunted 4D with the flintlock 2 days and modern rifle 2 days when it was raining. I didn't see a legal buck, but did miss a bear (running through the white pines) with the flintlock.

Great deer! Congratulations. Good luck in the flintlock season. Which they had a flintlock only season here in IL.

Flintlock season after Christmas is my favorite time of the year.
I hunt with a gang of guys, and sometimes just a few. We cover a lot of ground here in 4D (center of the state).

Good for you.
Any load info?
Range?
Thanks

Brits I killed the first doe just standing by a big popler tree where I had a good view of some well used deer trails. The shot was perhaps 55 to 60 yards. Double lung hit and she did not run more than 30 yards before piling up.
The second deer I killed "still hunting" which is not being still at all but moving slowly and very quietly through the woods looking for deer. You stop every couple steps and scan every bit of cover before moving again. Its a great way to see a lot of tails running away. But sometimes if you keep the wind right and move slowly enough you come up on some deer before they know your there. Its my favorite way to hunt deer and very rewarding hunting for me. I shot the second deer at maybe 40 yards as it stood up. The ball took it lower pn the brisket than I wanted and it ran almost 50 yards before going down.
Both deer were killed with 50 cal. flintlock loaded with a 490 patched round ball. 015 patch over 65 grains of 3F Goex black powder. Both balls passed completely through. I have killed many deer with that same load.

Logcutter, congrats on one and good luck during the Flintlock only season. You guys in PA are lucky to have such a season, even if they do stick you so late in the year!

We are very lucky. And yes it comes after the bow hunters and the rifle hunters but there are still plenty of deer out there and you have all the woods to yourself. Not many guys go out more than the first day. Its cold and here in the northern tier the snow gets deep. I have a good pair of snowshoes and I'm out all season or till I run out of tags.

Excellent.
Here in the UK hunting deer with a muzzle loading rifle is illegal, hahahaha hahaha, I know hahahaha.

Enjoy your catch and keep carrying the banner for us less fortunate ones.

Congrats on a great hunt. I wish you well in the flintlock only season. I wish all muzzleloader seasons were traditional only!! Iowa needs to change their laws!! Greg :)

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'm getting some stuff ready for the hunt tomorrow. Weather looks a little warmer than I'd like but I am more than ready to get back out there.
