I do not use Parts wheellock - steel castings.
I use rolled and forged steel . during the documentary, will demonstrate what kind of steel is suitable for individual elements wheellock, and that applies heat and chemical treatment (carburizing).
it will be a lot of work - you have to be patient

I use rolled carbon steel and alloy steel. The reason why this type of steel used :

1. We can make any mechanism wheellock.
2. the possibility of selecting appropriate mechanical properties of steel
3. opportunity to improve carbon steel enriching
4. the possibility of using the original, old locksmith techniques
5.the possibility of forging steel

1. + 2. + 3. + 4. + 5. = very large resistance and durability, mechanism components.great satisfaction with the work done

You must have in his workshop, basic locksmith tools and basic blacksmith tools. you will need a furnace for steel ( forging, carburizing ). These requirements can be achieved in a simple manner. :hatsoff:
 
lock plate can be made of steel at least 0.20% of carbon , but it is essential after work carburet steel

That drill and chisel area you have. I was making my own hook tang and the recessed area were the breach plug hooks on was a problem. I burned up $20 worth of dremmel stones before I broke off a 1" peice of a corse rattail file and clamped it in my drill. It works good. You can lean into it and gouge out that metal. You'de still have to square the corners but it saves time.

It works great. Seems to chuck better on the smaller end because of the taper. A lot cheaper than dremmel stones. :stir:
