So, what, don't birds lose feathers from time to time and don't people find those feathers. Who's to say you just didn't find a stray feather that a bird shead. Geeze.

Heck, I can buy bluejay and other exotic feathers from my local fly fishing shop, they sell them for fly tying...

Even my daughter had one in her class to use as a visual aid for a report about the bluejay, nothing was ever said about it...

Now eagles and official state birds, that's another story...

But for the sake of our members, nix the jay's...

Hey Musketman,

You can't really buy blue jay in fly shops anymore. It's illegal to sell them. I am a long time fly-fisher/fly-tier and I have a number of exotic feathers. Rules are constantly in flux and a number of the feathers I bought back in the mid-70's can't be found or legally purchased now.

Nonetheless, if you want to use a feather for the vent of your ML, a fly shop is a good place to go to select one. Unless they bring something out of the dungeon in the back (don't ask), you will end up with a legal, decorative, and useful feather. If you have any unusual feathers, it's best to store them in the package they were purchased from the store in. That has saved my butt a couple of times.

Agreed,,,if ya gonna use one,,use pig bristle. I just use a cloth tied to a sting that hangs from my trigger guard. It also wipes mositure out of the pan, which a brush wont do.

Good advice...I have a pan whisk, but use a cloth--it cleans the pan better and down heayah in Lousyanna the hummadity gums up pans fast!

Song birds are protected under both State and Federal statutes. Its a Federal Statute being enforced to the letter by some officials that has gotten us in this position. A woman in Illinois was actually indicted for a Felony offense under the Lanham Act for Using feathers she got from a zoo to make Mrs. Clinton an Indian " Dreamcatcher ". Even the U.S. District Court Judge was disturbed that the U.S. Attorney would indict the woman, and insist on a guilty plea! ( or trial) I believed she was pardoned by Pres. Clinton in that flurry of pardons he issued his last day in office. It is a crime to possess birds, or parts of birds that are protected species. Intended to stop the trade in Migratory birds and in raptors, such as the Bald Eagle, the wording is so broad it covers all protected species, including song birds. If you didn't know, a Blue Jay is a song bird.

Fined for possession of a feather?
Man your country IS wierd

You are misquoting the law.

You are not fined for "possession of a feather". You are fined for having parts of a protected species. Yes, it's hard to understand our laws if you don't know what they are.

Use a rooster neck hackle. You can buy them at Crazy Crow or any other trading outfit that sells goods to mountain men and indians.
But still, some Barney Fife type may still try to give ya a ticket. :shake:
