Could someone tell me what this pan is lined with? It looks

sorta' like copper but I'm not sure.

That is a beautiful presentation grade gun. The type given to Presidents & Kings for
sure. So many hours to produce by an artisan. What is the history, if known?
And more details. I think the lining is gold, when viewed from the perspective of
the time and money invested in producing this piece. Or an alloy of it.

Going to say gold though likely 14c. While on a presentation gun here was not uncommon on high end guns made to be used afield.
Gold and some platinum was even made in to touch hole liners. It was the only tarnish/rust proof metal they had.

WARNING! Do not breath on, touch or allow your craven physical body to get close to that rifle. We on this forum are much too low in class to sully this rifle. Plus, touching it with one's filthy hands would likely result in losing one or more fingers. I would even be hesitant to look upon it for longer than a few moments.

Hi Andy,
The pan is gold lined. It was a common feature on high end guns during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Often the touch hole was lined in gold as well. The gold did not corrode so it worked well. Eventually they discovered that platinum worked even better. I am afraid, American style long rifles pimped out to look like European presentation pieces hold no attraction to me. I admire the workmanship but not the concept. The gold is probably higher karat than 14 because the silver and copper in 14 karat would tarnish quicker. I believe pan linings and touch holes were made from 22 karat or pure gold. You also wanted the softer metal to peen into the dovetails and allow the teeth cut into the bottom of the pan to bite into the gold.
