Paper reload carriers for powder or shot...following the general design of paper cartridges from yesteryear...plan on using these for a dove shoot this fall:

1) Cut sheets of 8.5" x 11" in half twice to get 4+1/4" x 5+1/2" sized papers
2)Roll a paper up using a 5/8" dowel with the end result being 4+1/4" long
3)Fold flaps on one end like a coin wrapper and crease shut against a hard surface
4)Pour in the powder or shot
5)Flatten the excess paper right in front of the contents to make sort of a tail out of the excess paper
6)1st fold = the tail folding 90 degrees flat across / above the contents, crease firmly;
7)2nd fold = the remaining tail wrapping back behind the tail’s body, crease firmly;
8)3rd fold = wrapping the remaining tip back across the tail’s body, crease firmly;
9) To use, tear off the tail and dump the contents down bore.
10) Swing on Dove and pull trigger
11) (following the shot, cussing is optional)

Guys: I found that if I sealed the paper tubes by dipping them into melted parafin wax, to about 1/2-3/4 " up from the bottom, and then stick the tube onto some wax paper so that the cooling wax flattens and holds the folds on the end closed, A side benefit is that the paper does not seem to burn after leaving the barrel. And, the wax melts into an oil and seems to lube the barrel some, so that its easy to keep on loading without using lubes.

Something for you to consider. Oh, the parafin also helped to seal the seam up the side, although I was using 3M post-it note paper, with the sealing stirp on the side to seal the tube. Two wraps around the mandrill was all that was needed, too.

This is the best explanation of how to make paper cartridges I have seen. Thanks for posting this.

RB,

You are very close to how I do it except that I tear off the tab from the front of the paper cartridge and press that still secured back end into the muzzle. I try to tear it pretty even with the muzzle. This leaves a paper shot cup with an open end. I place an over shot card (with an edge nicked to relieve pressure on loading)over the shot to keep that in the bore and run it all down together. I make my own over shot cards with a 5/8s punch.

I assumed he meant he folded the flap over and stapled it instead of relying only on the fold, but then still tore it off to use it...hopefully he'll respond later.

I kind of like the simplicity of the folded bottom end, and the folded tail as that's the way some of the military cartidges were done long ago...made up about 100 more paper tubes with different color paper for powder charges.
