How, exactly, was the paper cartridge used in live firing? I've seen them where the paper is tied off on both sides of the ball- was the paper holding the powder charge ripped off before loading or was it left secured to the ball? How were paper cartridges used with bullets? were they secured in any sort of way or was the bullet carried independently from the charge?
thanks folks

Different gun's diff ways, but for the most part since your asking in the CW site ..It was rip off the end with powder and pour in then (can go 2 ways put paper and bullet in, or put the minie in add paper as wading, Im sure you'll get a few more ways. Fred :hatsoff:

So the paper would be ripped off just below the ball so the long piece of paper holding the powder was detatched from the ball?

Shot a few yesterday. I roll my tubes on a dowel rod insert the ball and tie off the end, remove dowel rod from tube, charge with powder and double fold the end. I then dip the ball end in lube. When loading I tear the tail off, pour the powder, thumb start the ball paper and all (works like a patch also optional whether you tear off the excess paper at the muzzle, I don't usually) and ram home, prime and shoot the piece. Repeat often!

In the previous post I was referring to RB cartridges. If you are shooting Minie balls there two roads you can go down. If shooting an American or French style minie with lube grooves the bullet is removed from the paper before ramming, for a slick sided British Pritchett bullet the paper is rammed with th bullet and is a paper patch. The excess paper should be torn off after the bullet has been thumb started. Pritchett bullet cartridges are a little more time consuming to make since the paper has to be of the correct thickness for best accuracy and the bullet itself serves as the dowel rod. HTH
