Paper for sighting in and load development, then steel at further yardage for fun, if you can hit a 8x8 plate at 50 too 100 yards deer are in trouble.

We use steel targets for woods walks. No need to go downrange because the targets ring like a bell. Hang Fast Targets has a simple target that mounts on a T Post with a short section of chain. Very reactive and good sound. The hanger and chain are shielded by the plate so target failures are rare to non existent. We've had targets on the same post for over 5 years with no maintenance except painting.

At our range we use a plastic milk bottles (gal for pistols, quart or pint for rifles).
Using a length of cord one end is tied to the bottle and the other tied to a plastic tent stake driven into the berm.
I usually paint mine florescent colors.
They jump around great!

I have kids, so milk jugs are in no short supply. I fill em to the brim with water. I shoot steel too.

what’s the deal with the bowling pins?? Do they not break?

Used to shoot Boling Pin Compititions with a friend Co Worker. He ws very good. So we checked into buying the old used Ten Pins from Brunswick. They have to replace them when they lose there performance and before every Pro Bowing compitition. THey were about a penny per pin if you bount a full tractor trailer truck full of them. just did not have anywhere to store them. a 50 cal Maxi ball just a small chage of 75 to 80 grains of ff will knock the pin off the 4x8 ft table and also blow it to bits if you can hit it. Never found candle pins or duck pins. I do like Bowling Duck pins but only know of 2 prvet lanes on an Island off the coast of Maine. they are really hard to find any longer.

Paper, steel, and old bowling pins.

I sight in using paper targets, but for fun I shoot steel targets that I made. I bought the clangers from Walmart, and made a frame from old rebar and some chains I had in my tool shed.

Our club always has old bowling pins hanging on strings. They're a lot of fun to make dance.

In the local (with in 200mi) 15 Rhondys every single one has swinging steel for targets. Rifle from 50 to 100+ yards Pistol 30 to 75 yards. These are all on trail walks. Many have also started a derringer trail. Standing still on paper at a known distance is alright, but I enjoy moving from target to target at a different distance a bit more. Seeing the target swinging gives a person immediate satisfaction.

Well so far the vast majority who have been responding to this thread prefer shooting reactive targets , and so do l . For me there is nothing as good as a tough Woods walk , Novelty , or Mixed bag shoot ( mix of steel & novelty targets ) . l find shooting paper very boring , but to each his own.
