I was at Fort Niagara last summer during there french/indian war reinactment. And a guy showed me a leather pouch full of paper speed loaders. Basically powder and balls rolled in paper. Is there any special type paper that I would need to use to make my own, or is there a place to order this kind of stuff?

I just got into this hobby in Dec. I have alot of military type rifles, but I found I like working with the wood stocks more than just buying parts and assembling them.

So Here I go deeper into the Hobby. I just got a Harpers Ferry pistol that's in the works. Geez I didn't realize all the accessories that go along with this hobby. :shocked2:

Sounds like paper cartridges. Commonly used for military muskets, smooth or rifled. I've made them using brown paper from bags, and I've hunted with them. Some folks use newprint.
In a rifle the paper takes the place of the cloth patch. Accurate enough, but I really saw no benefit on a hunt, since the deer weren't shooting back.
There are patterns out there for how you cut the paper. Try searching this forum for 'cartridges'

:v Found the info off of the forum and posted the corisponding link. Thanks alot. :hatsoff:

Lot of work that method :applause: but I find my el cheapo method to work just as well. Go to your nearest dollar store and buy a stack of recycled paper note pads and a few glu-sticks. I can get four 100-page note pads (4"x6" at most) for a $1) and 2 g-stiks for a $1.

Roll around a suitable dowel, glue edege, even if square, and then the bottom, sort like shownm in your link, less the dimple. A dab of glue holds fine, as it does to seat the top just by folding it over.

Now, if I were in some PC event where the PC patrol might git me ... then yar', I'll make 'em a might purrtier ;) .

Alot of good info! I rolled some empty tubes today and had already thought of, and used the glue stick. Keeps the tubes nice and tight. My ammo, and flint should be here tomarrow, and I'm going to play around with loading the cartriges tommarow night. Can't wait to shoot. I'm really itching to build a Harpers Ferry rifle next. :winking:

I like the tapered papered ones.........for hunting they load super easy and very FAST! I use 20# printer paper.....recycle the used ones.
Looks great and good info in your link  !

Dumb question on my part ... but would paper patching work with roundballs in a shallow-rifled 45 barrel? I guess I'll be trying this on Sunday :) !

i read an old report where they rolled their musket cartages out of news paper.

in the hayday of match shooting before the cartage rifles. some fasle muzzles were made to take a oiled paper patch some pre cut some were strips.

Hey Fellas
That is the way to do it. That is how my Rev.war group does it. As a matter of fact I have used a simular method for hunting, even shot loads...
Thanks my best regards Loyalistdawg
