Dallas M. Walker, age 93 of rural Elwood, departed this world peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024 with his family by his side after a long, well-lived life. He was born July 11, 1931 in Tipton County, the son of Paul T. and Eulla M. (Hollowell) Walker and lived his entire life in the area. Dallas attended Reeder and Curtisville Elementary Schools and graduated from Wendell L. Willkie High School in the class of 1949. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. After the service, Dallas was employed by Public Service Company of Indiana (now Duke Energy) in various positions from 1956 to 1990 when he retired as a shift supervisor at the power plant.
On Dec. 24, 1955, Dallas married Florence Earp, and she passed away Oct. 14, 1961. He later married Flora E. Puterbaugh on Dec. 19, 1975, and they have shared nearly 50 years of marriage together. Dallas was a devoted member of Curtisville Christian Church where he attended his entire life and was baptized on March 1, 1942. He served as a Deacon for several years and was co-chairman of the centennial celebration held in 2011. Through church and his extracurricular activities, Dallas became a great friend and mentor to many young men along the way.
Dallas was well-known and a respected competitor in black powder, trap, and bench rest shooting, having won many awards, plaques, and prizes both locally and nationally. He shot his last match at age 92, placing second. Dallas not only shot in competition, but also enjoyed hunting wild game and varmints. Over the years, he belonged to several gun clubs and presently was a Platinum life member of the N.R.A.; a life member and Area Coordinator of Varmint Hunters International; and a life member of the Alexandria Gun and Conversation Club.
Dallas was immensely proud of his family. He thoroughly enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s various sporting events, especially softball and baseball season where he was known as “Grandpa Walker” to everyone. As Dallas grew older in age, he was not able to attend his great-grandchildren’s sporting events. However, hearing stories and seeing pictures of them brought him great joy.
Dallas’ family includes his wife, Flora Walker of Elwood; sons, Tim (Lou Ann) Walker of Elwood and Jim (Terri) Walker of Tipton; 4 grandchildren, Lindsey (Travis) Sorensen of Tipton, Megan (Michael) Planalp of Cicero, Matthew (Ali) Walker of Westfield, and Chelsea Brown of Mead, OK; and 5 great-grandchildren, Tyler Sorensen, Caden Sorensen, Cohen Planalp, Alaina Planalp, Harper Walker, and a great-granddaughter expected in 2025. Dallas was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Florence Walker; 2 sisters, Phyllis (husband Dale) French and Jeannine Walker; and a step-daughter, Brenda Brown.
A funeral service celebrating Dallas’ life and legacy will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Gary Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Elwood and will include military honors by the U.S. Army and Elwood V.F.W. honor guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am to 1 pm prior to the funeral on Saturday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Curtisville Christian Church. Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
