Yet another vote for Renaissance wax. Used to use Butcher's wax, but the Renwax is just as good and easier.
I also put it on the metalJohnson's Paste Wax when I plan to take a wood stock out into wet weather.
100% correct you are.I would wait a long time before applying a wax to that finish.
Let the finish fully cure, not just dry, before applying wax that will prevent it from curing.

Soft brush or terry towel will fix that. And if your was is filling up the letters and numbers and such you may be applying too much was. It';s not like it's a coat of whitewash.if you do use white wax you will have all the markings on the metal stand out!
