I know some people use a hole saw with the teeth ground off and the edge sharpened. Round or square they both work fine.

Hi Tony, I use Arch Punches to cut my patches. Try a company called McMaster-Carr they carry a good range of quality punches & have very good service. Their punches come in sizes 3/16" thru 4" in fairly small increments, so I'm sure you'll find something to suit your needs. Their web address is http://www.mcmaster.com/. They also sell a synthetic block for cutting the patches on without dulling the punch.....I bought one & it works well. I would also suggest buying a dead-blow mallet to use with the punch, I bought mine from Harbour Freight Tools.

on the cheap, you can sharpen a hole saw.... find the inside diameter you want, chuck it up in a drill and sharpen on a sander, minimum angle. use a higher end holesaw like lennox for best results, othersI find have poor welds. you can cut patches by hand by creating a handle such as a pool ball or door knob. works well,I can cut 12 layers easily and cleanly.

Yep, chuck a hole saw, about 1 1/2 inch in diameter, if my memory is correct. I have one in the basement, but the basement is in shambles right now, so I can't find it.

chuck up that hole saw in an electric drill and with the drill running on low speed, grind off the teeth by holding the saw against a moving grinding wheel, belt sander, or what have you.

After the teeth are ground off, hold the saw blade about 60 degrees to a fine grinding wheel to grind an edge on the cutter.

Remove any burr that will form on the edge.

To use, staple, or use push pins to hold two or three layers of patching material to a board.

Drill out the patches, three at a time.

That said, square patches work as well as round ones, and may be easier to cut.

No difference in accuracy and much easier to cut them square using a rotary cutter on a cutting board, like those used for cutting quilting materials, etc.

Been Shooting square patches for years . No problem ! Easy to cut . Like roundball said .

I cut patches square with a rotary cutter that I bought at Wally's. It has graduations so you know just how wide you are cutting. You can do more than one layer at a time, it all depends on how hard you want to press on the cutter handle. :winking:

if you are lazy like me you can buy precut patches by Pedersoli from Flintlocks Etc. they are 1.653" diameter and are available in .005, .007, .010, .012, .015, .016, .018, and .023" thickness. 413-698-3822

 other than the experiment of cutting square patches, I hawked the auction boards hard for a couple years a long time ago and at an average of half price or less built up a really large inventory of Oxyoke and TC precut patches in 3 different diameters to cover all my calibers, both cotton & pillow ticking, prelubed and plain, mostly .015" and .018"

With a rotary cutter, cutting mat & plastic guide I can cut over 8192 one inch patches in about 10-12 minutes. I can cut 5000 of the 1.25"patches in the same time. I can cut 3528 of the 1 1/2" patch in the same time.
It actually takes longer to get the stuff out than to cut the patches. I spent about 2 hrs one day cutting patches & had enough patches to last me for 5 years in 8 different calibers..

Now if ya shoot 4-5 times a year I would just buy precut patches.

But if ya are a weekend shooter, go in halves with someone & buy the 60 MM Rotary Cutter, large cutting mat & large rule/guide & it will save ya time, money & you will never run out of patches.

the arch punches work the best. just trun the stem so it is true to the cutting end. chuck it in a drill press wrap your patching materal around a board about 4-5 times and you can be cutting enough patchs in an hour to sell to your friends for a year or more.

You don't need any special machines to make patches. Just make a cardboard round the size of the patch you need and use it as a pattern to draw circles on your patch cloth you are going to use. When you are sitting in front of the TV over this winter watching mindless drivell, cut out those cloth circles with a sharp pair of scissors. you can cut out about 100 patches during an hour long show and it didn't cost you any money for special machines or patch cutters.

I cut my own from pillow ticking material. Square. They shoot as well as round IMHO. I use the stripes on the pillow ticking as a cutting guide, cutting into strips, then cutting individual patches from the strips. I use a good pair of scissors. Fast, and easy.

I rip the material into strips, then use EMT shears to cut into squares. Easy to make hundreds in a very short time. The rest of the time is better spent hunting or shooting.........
