A muzzleloader acquitance told me to use murphy oil soap and water as a patch lube when shooting. Has anyone used that mix before and does it work?

Thanks

Welcome,
There's about a Gazillion recipies out there.
I've seen several that have Murphys as a component but haven't seen anyone use just Murphys an water.
I think it would be a might too slippery, and I ain't sure how well it'll act if it's mixed with the burning powder.

But, fully half of the Gazzilion recipies work for someone, :idunno:

There are many mixes and products. As stated before, even if lads use the same products mixed together, often times their ratio's are not the same.

Some time ago my needs for a more historical lube came along, and I switched to rendered animal fat and beeswax mixture. But to more directly answer your question, no, I havent used that particular combo.

Will it work for you? Likely. It is working for your pard.

No there isn't. :shake:
I know for a fact, there are a bazillion, gazillion recipies out there.
Answer: yes. Murphy's is an old standby for many. Most mixes, greases, commercial products will work reasonably well.
The two I have had the worst experience with are chicken fat and Crisco.

Save yourself a lot of money and buy a pound of lard to use as lube.

The good thing about patch lubes is they all seem to work. The bad thing about patch lubes is they all seem to work! :hmm:
Some just a little better ot differently with different conditions. Therein lies to problem.
Plain olive oil is probably the best easiest to use over most conditions. Most convenient and pretty cheap, too. It really isn't necessary to find obscure concoctions when olive oil is available.
But some guys feel it is a requirement to shoot PBR's.

I use a 1-1-1 ratio of Murphy's oil soap, rubbing alcohol, and water, and can easily shoot 20+ balls and still have them load easy. It's also what I use to clean at the end of the day, and it works as well as anything I've used.

Years ago I purchased a small container of "Old Slickum" [liquid] patch lube and was very pleased with it. I also noticed it looks and smells almost exactly like Murphy's Oil Soap. Btw, I used it only at the range and only when ambient temp. was above freezing. If you wish to use it when the temp. is below freezing, use some 90% isoprpoyl (rubbing) alcohol and less water in the mixture. Btw, what others said about the number and effectiveness of patch lubes is true.

I see your 20 and add a few more using bear-grease.

I guess I have a hard time understanding why one would want to make something as "simple" as lube so very complicated and time-consuming.

I am one to think that each new formula of patch lube is the answer. I keep trying different ones looking for that magic lube.
I just keep coming back to this formula and it works:

Hydrogen Peroxide
Rubbing Alcohol
Murphys Oil Soap
1 measure of each.

Lightly damp on the patch at loading.
If you find something magic, please let me know

This is my magic combination also.

BTW FWIW this concoction works exceptionally well especially when used with Swiss 1-1/2g powder. Almost no fouling at all. Unbelievble, but at 32 dollars a pound I'll have to give up other hobbies to afford the Swiss. Never had accuracy in a muzzleloader before like the Swiss 1-1/2g powder gives in my rifles. I see why the BP cartridge boys love it.
