patch knife?

i got this knife from a person who bought a storage locker. it was mixed in with other black powder stuff. do ya'll think it is an original? the front of handle looks to maybe poured pewter. the wood handles look like mahogany it sure looks the part.

no sheath was with it but it is in nice condition, i use it on the range to cut patches at the muzzle,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Looks like a little skinner to me.
I use a little wood handled kitchen paring knife for my patch knife.

Nice looking knife but not original because really no thing as patch knifes . Something modern times have come up with. Just like the short starter.

here is the other side. it looks bigger in the photos than it really is. maybe it was a skinner, who knows but defiantly old,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

well i don't think they would have pre-cut patches, i don't know for sure,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

My guess, and only a guess, is a handmade knife by someone who knew what they were doing.

You are right, they use their hunting knifes no need to carry extra do-dads as we do now.

That’s a beautiful little knife. Original or not, it looks like it feels great in hand during long work like skinning.

If it works for that, it works. But, to me, it looks more like a small skinner. I prefer a straight blade for cutting at the muzzle.

It does strongly appear 'old'. Even the handle design. Aging on the blade, etc.

Just because you think “patch knives” weren’t a thing doesn’t mean THAT knife isn’t original. There have been knives in all kinds of shapes and sizes since before we were making blades out of metal.
It’s hard to tell from the picture, but the styling and patina seem to be consistent with a 19th century piece.

Why do we think it's all that old? Current makers,,, of many things,,, deliberately "age" their products.
Of course, "old," is a relative term. Many now consider stuff from the 1970s "old."
